What happens when you seamlessly combine Kendrick Lamar’s impeccable flow with Dr. Dre’s legendary beats? You get this incredible mashup album titled “The Damn. Chronic.” The dynamic rap duo collaborate on a mashup album that encompasses different eras of hip-hop and even goes back to N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton.”

The vocals are not only from Kendrick’s “Damn” and the beats are not only from 1992’s “The Chronic.” Kendrick raps “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” over “Forgot About Dre,” Lamar’s bars from “The Heart Part 2” over Dre’s “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang,” and the first track borrows from Eminem’s “My Name Is.” Besides two of Compton’s finest, the album features guest appearances by Jay Rock, Nate Dogg, Pusha T, and Alori Joh.

The mastermind behind the mashup mixtape is DJ Critical Hype, who perfectly executed a similar project in 2016. DJ Critical Hype created the “Chance The Dropout” mashup album that combined Chance The Rapper’s vocals with Kanye West beats. Coincidentally, just like the current album, the “Chance The Dropout” album features two artists from the same city, in that case, Chicago.

“Kendrick has so many flows, voices, and styles, plus Dre beats are really incredible, so I figured it would be dope,” Critical Hype told Pigeons & Planes. “I was determined to make it work, but the truth is it wasn’t easy. A lot of the tempos actually didn’t mix well. It was a lot more work trying to find good mixes. I had to dig deep.”

In 2015, K. Dot talked about meeting Dr. Dre who he considers his “mentor.” “I had to really snap out of fan mode and become a professional,” Kendrick told Annie Mac in a 2015 interview. “After we were introduced, he said he liked my music and I said that I’m a fan of his work. Then he said, ‘Okay, now write to this, write a full song to this’. Right after I said ‘Man, Dr. Dre, you’re the greatest’ and he was like, ‘Yeah man, you’re good too, you could be something… alright now write to this beat.’”
