Thanks to his work on 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey, director Dan Trachtenberg is one of the hottest names in the sci-fi genre.

That certainly isn’t hyperbole, as Trachtenberg was recently tapped to direct an episode of the highly-anticipated fifth and final season of Netflix’s mega-hit, Stranger Things.

Part of the reason that Trachtenberg is such a sought-after filmmaker these days, other than the inherent, undeniable quality of his films, is that he’s able to bring such a fresh spin to previously existing intellectual properties, as he demonstrated with 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey, which were both massive departures from their predecessors.

And while working within the framework of a franchise “excites” Trachtenberg, he’s also hoping to bring “several” original projects to the big screen in the coming years.

“I’ve got several of those [original projects] that I’ve been working on forever. It just so happens that the things that are franchise-connected are easier to greenlight,” Trachtenberg told BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast ahead of the release of Prey on physical media on October 3.

“But my attraction to the stuff that is pre-existing IP has always been:  ‘What if we did this crazy thing with it?’. That excites me as much as the original stuff does, and hopefully, I’ll be able to bring some of those original tales to the screen.”
