Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Daredevil: Born Again.

In the season one finale of the widely-acclaimed first season of Daredevil: Born Again, Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/The Punisher confronts a group of police officers who have co-opted his logo. This storyline is something that mirrors real life.

The phenomenon of police officers adopting the Punisher logo became a big of phenomenon in recent years that even the character’s co-creator Gerry Conway has spoken out about it, calling the trend “disturbing” and a misunderstanding of what The Punisher stands for.

“To me, it’s disturbing whenever I see authority figures embracing Punisher iconography because the Punisher represents a failure of the Justice system. […] So when cops put Punisher skulls on their cars or members of the military wear Punisher skull patches, they’re basically siding with an enemy of the system,” Conway said.

In the season one finale of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “Straight to Hell”, Bernthal’s Punisher confronts a group of corrupt cops who have been committing crimes while donning his logo, calling them a ‘bunch of clowns’.

“You think you know my loss? How I see the world? You know how I see the world? I won’t f—— piss on you if you were on fire, you got that?” Punisher says. “You’re a bunch of clowns, you know that?”

“Also notice how the skulls that these fanboys painted on their vests are just poor imitations of Punisher’s logo. Punisher’s logo comes from his own pain and loss, meanwhile these cops are role-playing as Punisher while they have a cushy job and probably families to go back to,” one fan assessed.

“I just love how ironic and idiotic many corrupt cops are wear Frank Castle symbol as the Punisher when they barely even know of his ideals and Frank doesn’t give a damn at all,” another added.

“Fun fact: Marvel changed the Punisher’s iconic logo, because it had been co-opted by s—– cops and GI Joe pretenders like the January 6 idiots. The Punisher hates dirty cops and condemns any law enforcement officer who acts like him,” a third reminded fans.

Daredevil: Born Again has not only been renewed for a second season but has already begun production, with it currently scheduled to be released around the same time next year. All nine episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+, as are the three seasons of the original Netflix series Daredevil.
