People With Dark Senses Of Humor Are Intellectually Superior—Science

A groundbreaking study was just released, and the implications are huge. This might be the most important finding for comedy and geniuses in the history of dark humor.

Ladders–

In art, a morbid sensibility is often meant to indicate depth on behalf of the creator. For patrons, the same is often perceived as anti-social.

The research literature is a little more nuanced, often suggesting that it’s more than possible for healthy subjects to appreciate both the humor and seriousness of unpleasant outcomes. This capacity may even be more common among the highly intelligent.

Consistently, the participants analyzed for the new paper who evidenced a dark sense of humor were associated with superior intellect, mood regulation, and reduced aggressiveness.

There you have it. All this time, people have been telling me “you can’t joke about that” and “reel it in, man” and “Jesus, have some respect. The body is still warm.” Turns out, they were simply too stupid to see the humor in it. Their inferior intellect, lack of mood regulation, and increased aggressiveness prevented them from the laugh they sorely needed. After all, laughter is the best medicine! It heals all wounds.

Well, not all wounds. Laughter really won’t do much for internal bleeding, organ failure, stuff on the inside, etc.

Jokes aside, this isn’t all that surprising. These days, it seems that every single piece of work I put out either garners a “yay!” or a “ABSOLUTELY NAY” response. You’ve got people laughing, people saying they get it but it’s just not that funny, and people saying that under no circumstances should I ever be allowed access to a keyboard ever again. Really divides the audience.

Here’s a great example (in my humble opinion). After the Chris D’Elia stuff came out, I wrote a song about how the age of consent laws in our country vary state to state. Now, if you watch this song and somehow think that it HELPS creeps/predators in their behavior, well, you’re a moron. If you recognize that it’s clearly condemning them, and also satirizing the people who defend them, congratulations: you ARE smarter than a 5th grader.

Take a look through those replies. Holy moly. Talk about drawing a line in the sand between weak intellect and strong intellect. This isn’t to say that everyone who said “this is funny” is smart: I’m sure lots of those people only understood this on a surface level. But plenty of people understood what I was going for, and plenty didn’t. This tends to happen frequently with my work… might want to work on that if I ever plan to make a lot of money in this biz.

Anyway, glad to know that my sense of humor means I’m smart. Not that I needed a reminder.
