Woman Gets On Long, International Flight—She’s Disturbed By The Meal Delta Served: ‘BOLD Choice’

On a recent international flight, a woman says that Delta made a bold culinary choice. And it had unintended consequences. Viewers familiar with the Delta in-flight dish, however, disagree.

An airplane cabin is a sealed communal atmosphere. That means manners matter more than ever. But sometimes when polite intentions collide with bodily functions, the body wins. So when Erika (@erika_vision) posted a video with the caption “chicken curry is BOLD choice for airplane food to say the least,” she almost didn’t need to go into more detail.

Unsurprisingly, she did. In text superimposed over a short panoramic shot from the window to the aisle, which reinforces the tightness of airliner quarters, she gives the unsparing details from her flight: “Delta [sic] please do not EVER AGAIN serve chicken curry on a large international flight.”

She then gets very specific, writing, “The odors produced by travelers afterwards were horrifying and the lines for the bathrooms unending.”

Finally, she delivers the cringe-inducingest coup de grâce ever: “I was in the aisle seat and kept getting crop dusted with curry farts.”

Oof.

Flying The Smelly Skies

Users in the comments are quick to share their own in-flight experiences with cuisine and its inevitable aftereffects.

“Wait till you are on Air Baltic and the over enthusiastic American (I am American) dude in front of you orders the hot Baltic sprats dinner. And scarfs it down. The stench!!!!” said @lindaleenda12.

Others get even more graphic. “This reminds me of the video where all the airplane passengers have their noses covered and the sound track says, “Whoever is farting, please stop farting it smells,” recalled @scorpiosharon.

“We had this on the transatlantic flight to Athens. Absolutely foul. Whatever senior executive at Delta is responsible for food service, should be fired,”  said @_account_is_banned.

Others, however, vehemently defended the dish.

“Really? We had it. Prob one of the best meals we’ve had in economy on Delta,” one wrote.

“Wait it was so good what r u saying,” another said.

“That chicken curry is one of the best things delta serves get out of here,” a third told the traveler.

In-Flight Etiquette

Humans fart an average of 14 times a day. Every now and again, they have to come out: It is biology. So the discourse around public flatulence has been around about as long as humans. Erasmus, a 15th-century theologian (and correspondent of King Henry VIII), thought a cough could hide the sound of gas. But in these cough-sensitive times, perhaps taking a cue from Roman Emperor Claudius is a more solid move. He “planned an edict to legitimize the breaking of wind at table, either silently or noisily, after hearing about a man who was so modest that he endangered his health by an attempt to restrain himself.”

Then again, maybe not.

The reason flights can be such gassy atmospheres is because as the air pressure drops, the gas in your gut expands by up to 30%. Then it looks for a place to go. So when it is time to pass gas in a crowded situation, most people leave the room or control themselves. Yet a post-curry venting might me too much to ignore. In that instance, if you must break wind, apologize to your seatmates.

Technology, too, aids in the decontamination of sulfur scents in the air: the “fart filter.” Though not an official label, the air filtration system on a Delta plane gradually allows old air to seep out of the cabin while bringing fresh air back in. So the air itself gets refreshed, and hopefully, the scent of toots gets diluted.

A few small precautions might make traveling more comfortable, like packing Tums (with gas relief).
