Woman Says She Got Dress-Coded On Delta Flight From Florida To New York, Asked To Cover Herself With Blanket: ‘Since When Is There A Dress Code???’

A traveler says she was nearly kicked off a Delta Air Lines flight to New York after a flight attendant allegedly took issue with her outfit. Her story has sparked a debate about airline dress codes, passenger etiquette, and how much discretion flight attendants have.

Kay Rose (@kayymrose) was flying from West Palm Beach to New York on a 6:30am Delta flight, according to her initial TikTok.

The text in the video reads, “Traveling except the saxophones kept getting louder because I almost got kicked off the plane for my outfit.”

In the clip, Rose wears what looks like a typical airport outfit: glasses, a white Alo crop top that exposes her shoulders and midriff, Alo sweatpants, and sneakers. She also carries a small gray blanket and pulls a rolling suitcase.

She wasn’t traveling alone.

The TikTok also shows her friend in a similar casual outfit. Her friend wears brown, with a tank top that extends down to her waistband.

Can A Flight Attendant Police Your Airport Outfit?

In a follow-up TikTok, Rose explains what she says happened aboard the Delta flight.

According to her account, a flight attendant approached her and asked if she had a jacket.

Rose says she told the flight attendant she didn’t. She did, however, have a blanket. “‘Can you put it on?'” Rose recalls the flight attendant saying.

The traveler says she used the blanket to cover up and returned to her seat. She claims the flight attendant then pulled her from her window seat and told her she wasn’t following protocol. “‘Are you refusing to follow protocol?'” Rose says the flight attendant questioned her.

That left Rose confused. She says she thought her outfit was appropriate for travel.

The two apparently reached a stalemate. Rose says she faced the possibility of getting kicked off the flight.

Rose didn’t clarify whether she ultimately made it to New York. She did say the flight attendant never clearly explained what was wrong with her outfit.

Rose was left to assume the issue involved her top. She also said she’s part of the “free the nip” movement and doesn’t wear a bra because she considers herself small-busted. She also says she sweats a lot on flights, which is why she opts to wear tank tops on them.

The videos have raised a larger question among viewers: Can a Delta passenger actually be removed from a flight because of what they’re wearing?

The answer isn’t a simple yes or no.

What Is Delta’s Dress Code For Passengers?

Delta does not appear to publish a traditional passenger dress code that requires travelers to wear specific shirts, pants, or shoes.

However, Delta’s Contract of Carriage gives the airline authority to refuse transportation in certain situations involving a passenger’s attire.

According to Delta’s official Contract of Carriage, the airline can refuse transport when a passenger’s “conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers.”

Delta can also refuse transportation when a passenger fails to comply with its rules or the terms of its Contract of Carriage.

The policy gives Delta some discretion. However, it doesn’t mean a crop top, exposed shoulders, or sweatpants automatically violate the airline’s rules.

There’s an important distinction between Delta disliking an outfit and an outfit violating the conditions under which the airline can refuse transportation.

Based on Rose’s account alone, it’s also unclear whether the flight attendant’s request involved her crop top or another safety or protocol issue.

How Common Is Getting ‘Dress-Coded’ On Flights?

Rose’s videos went viral, and viewers have plenty to say.

Rose wasn’t the only TikTok user to question Delta’s approach to passenger clothing.

Several commenters claimed they had experienced similar situations. Multiple viewers said they had been “dress-coded” for wearing a Lululemon Align top.

“As someone who has also gotten dress coded on a delta flight for wearing an align tank, i emailed customer service after and they sent me $300 as an apology. i had that email drafted before i even touched down,” one commenter shared.

The Lululemon Align collection is known for casual, athletic clothing. That made the comments surprising to some viewers.

If travelers can face questions over a common athletic crop top, commenters wondered where Delta draws the line.

Other users were just as confused as Rose was. Her look consisted of a crop top, sweatpants and sneakers. She also had a blanket with her for the early-morning flight. To some commenters, the outfit looked like standard travel attire.

“I don’t understand there’s nothing wrong with ur outfit?” one questioned.

“Since when is there a dress code ???” another pondered.

That split the comments into two camps: Some viewers saw nothing wrong with the outfit; others argued that passengers should expect some level of dress standard when flying.

So, Can You Get Kicked Off A Delta Flight For Your Clothes?

Technically, Delta’s contract allows the airline to refuse transportation in certain circumstances involving a passenger’s attire.

But this TikTok alone doesn’t show that wearing a crop top and sweatpants automatically violates Delta’s rules.

Rose’s story also doesn’t establish whether the flight attendant’s concerns involved her clothing alone or another onboard protocol.

For now, the viral TikTok has turned an awkward airport encounter into a broader debate about airline dress codes and flying etiquette.

Comfortable travel clothes are common. But airline employees can enforce safety rules and the airline’s terms of transportation.
