A TikTok has gone viral after one video appears to suggest a group of men offered to buy drinks for a group of friends before ditching them.
Having vacation drinks is one thing, but free vacation drinks is even better. However, one viral incident suggests that, when strangers offer to buy you drinks, you should always remain vigilant.
Usually, it’s arguable that girls use guys for drinks. But in this case, it looks like the shoe is on the other foot. The TikTok shows an extremely high receipt surrounded by drinks in what looks like a bar. The bill reads $1,000.
Accompanying the TikTok is on-screen text that read, “When random guys on vacation go, ‘Girls, drinks are on us,’ we ordered the most expensive drinks, they left and we got the bill with THEIR drinks too.”
“Paid it, packed our bags, flew home broke,” the description added.
The TikTok has amassed 655,600 views.
No Sympathy
Commenters weren’t very sympathetic.
“Not only did you get scammed by the guys, but by the bar,” one pointed out. “The total isn’t correct, you paid 300 over.”
“Honestly karma for ordering the most expensive stuff on someone else’s dollar in this economy,” a second said.
A third agreed with this statement, writing, “Ordering the most expensive thing on the menu when someone offers to pay for you is crazy.”
“Slaaaaaay kings,” a fourth wrote. “Good job men.”
While a fifth commented that “those dudes are absolute legends.”
‘Had No Choice But To Pay’
In a TikTok direct message conversation with BroBible, the TikToker said:
“The story happened when I was in Mykonos with my friend. We were sitting at a bar, and there were two guys sitting at the table next to us. They started talking to us and asked if we wanted them to buy us drinks, saying the drinks were on them.
At the time, there was a trend on TikTok where girls would order the most expensive drink on the menu when a guy offered to buy them a drink. We had already been drinking cocktails, so we decided to join in on the trend and ordered Grey Goose and Belvedere, which were the most expensive options on the menu.
After the guys saw what we ordered, they suddenly said they had to go to their car because they had forgotten something and that they would be right back. They got up, went over to the bar and spoke to the waiter, and then left the bar. They never came back.
About 30 minutes later, the waiter brought us the bill. We noticed that it also included the drinks the two guys had been drinking. When we asked why their drinks were on our bill, the waiter told us that the guys had said that we were paying for everything.
At that point, we obviously had no choice but to pay the bill ourselves.
I decided to post about it because I thought it was such a bizarre and funny experience, especially because of the way they left right after seeing what we ordered. I honestly didn’t expect the video to blow up at all. I was really surprised by how many people related to it and shared their own similar experiences. Seeing it go viral has been crazy, but it’s also been really fun to see everyone’s reactions!”
Why You Should Always Close Your Bar Tab Before Leaving
Similarly, in the past, BroBible has reported on people walking out of bars without paying their tabs. For instance, TikTok user @heathston seemed to proudly admit in a video that they always walk out without directly closing their tab before leaving. “They’re just gonna charge you a 20% tip,” he says, “Which is what I was gonna do anyways.”
However, in a viral response video, bartender Elissa Dunn (@hellqueencocktails) advised against this. “My bar adds on an automatic 20% gratuity if you walk out on your tab,” she notes. “That is not the norm. It’s usually somewhere about 15 to 18%.”
She also pointed out an emerging, concerning pattern wherein people are freezing or disabling their card after leaving so the money doesn’t leave their account.
As a result of this trend, Dunn warned that bars might start taking customers’ physical cards again. “There’s people just ruining it for everyone,” she remarked.
