Academy Award nominated actor Ed Harris has ripped the producers behind Dutton Ranch for what he perceives as misleading him about the size of his role on the series. Dutton Ranch is a Yellowstone sequel series on Paramount+.
On Dutton Ranch — one of many spinoffs of the popular Taylor Sheridan-created series Yellowstone — Ed Harris plays Everett McKinney, the local veterinarian in Rio Paloma and a Vietnam War Navy veteran.

The role, however, was not what Harris expected when he signed up, as he claimed he was pitched on the character being one of the four leads — which has thus far not materialized.
“Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters. And that wasn’t really the case,” Harris told Variety, adding that he felt “misled.”
“I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh.’ I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in Season 2]. I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth.”
Harris is currently signed on for two seasons of the series. After premiering on Paramount+ in May, Dutton Ranch — which stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their Yellowstone roles of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler — was renewed for a second season in June.
The veteran actor explained that when he actually watched the finished product, he thought it was “pretty good,” and that his character was “relatively important to the story.” However, during filming, “it didn’t feel that way.”
The Apollo 13 and The Truman Show star also specifically bemoaned a scene that he’d been “promised” in which his character sings that was ultimately cut from the final edit.
“They didn’t show it. They said it was too up for the dark ending of that episode. That, to me, was reason enough to say, ‘I’m voiding my contract.’ I [was like], ‘F— you people.’ That’s all I’ve got to say.”
Ed Harris says he felt “misled” about his “inconsequential” role on “Dutton Ranch,” and that halfway through filming Season 1, he was telling his team to “get me the f— out of here.”

Anytime I’m reminded of Ed Harris — an actor I genuinely love — I feel compelled to remind everyone that, for often as he’s played Midwestern and Texan, he was actually born and raised in New Jersey and attended Columbia University. He did, however, spend a few years at the University of Oklahoma to study drama.
According to Variety, spokespeople for Paramount, series creator Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios did not immediately respond request for comment.
Dutton Ranch is the fifth and latest series in the Yellowstone universe following the original series, which ran from 2018 to 2024, 1883 (2021-2022), 1923 (2022-2025), and Marshals (which currently airs on CBS and features Like Grimes’ Kayce Dutton).
In addition to all of those series, Sheridan has also created, written and occassionally directed the following series for Paramount: Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Lioness, Landman, The Madison, and the upcoming Samuel L. Jackson-starring series Frisco King.
