Elon Musk has been promoting Armie Hammer's controversial new movie 'Citizen Vigilante'

Elon Musk has been promoting a new Armie Hammer-starring film that was banned in its home country of Germany for its depiction of violence against immigrants.

Citizen Vigilante is a German indie action movie starring Armie Hammer as American businessman-turned-vigilante carrying out a violent mission to eliminate criminal migrants in Europe. Despite being banned in Germany, the film was released in the United States on June 19.

According to The Telegraph, Citizen Vigilante was banned in Germany for “depicting abhorrent violence and for being anti-migrant.”

Elon Musk shared banned German movie Citizen Vigilante with Armie Hammer in full on X/Twitter for 48 hours

The film’s director, Uwe Boll — whom Variety described as “a cinematic embarrassment since the early 2000s” — however, said that the film was not released in Germany because it was “denied an age certification in Germany for promoting vigilantism, effectively banning it from wide distribution.”

Elon Musk, the owner of X/Twitter and the most-followed person on the platform with over 240 million followers, promoted the film in full to watch it on the platform on Friday, June 26. The link was active for about two days.

“Here it is. It’s Uwe Boll, director from Citizen Vigilante. The hour’s up, the movie’s now available on X for 48 hours. Enjoy,” Musk wrote.

At the end of the film, there’s a blurb dedicating it to “the thousands of r— and murder victims in Europe who were betrayed by our legal system”.

European actors such as Costas Mandylor, Désirée Giorgetti, Steffen Mennekes, Neb Chupin and Mukit Abdul Hamid also star in the film alongside Hammer. Director Uwe Boll has since thanked Musk for promoting the film and called on President Donald Trump to watch it.

As for Hammer, whose career collapsed in 2021 following sexual assault allegations — which he denied, and which prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges over — any hope of recapturing a mainstream career have likely been squashed following his decision to star in this controversial film.
