Emergency landings don’t happen that often. But when they do, they’re terrifying for all involved—from the passengers and pilots to those watching from afar.

You never know what will happen but hope all involved will be safe. A Florida pilot recently pulled off an impressive emergency landing. And her young age only makes the feat more impressive. Now, total strangers online are requesting her as their personal pilot.

Pilot Makes Amazing Landing

In a viral video with more than 4.2 million views, content creator @888femmefatale reacts to footage of an incredible emergency landing done by pilot Emily Shelton.

“21 year old woman landed a plane on the highway in Florida,” the text overlay on the video read.

“That 21-year-old that landed that motherf—— plane on that Florida highway, b—-. You can fly me any the f— where,” @888femmefatale says enthusiastically, clearly impressed.

She was especially struck by how composed Shelton reportedly stayed calm once trouble started.

“You mean to tell me you smell burning fuel. You get in the cockpit; you see the engines going out. And at 21, you remain calm on that speaker?” she says.

The content creator says she doesn’t think she would have handled the situation with the same grace.

“I’m telling you, I’d have been, ‘We’re going down. We’re going down. Clear the road. Stop traffic. Get these motherf—— off the I-10, we’re coming,’” she says, imitating the frantic tone she’d have given the situation.

She adds that not only did the pilot stay “calm, cool, collected.” She did all that while navigating the plane under a highway sign to land cleanly on the highway while the engine was giving out.

“B—- you can fly me any the f— where. I will get on a plane you could fly above, b—-. She need to go ahead, buy Spirit Airlines, start it up, get it back, we know who gonna ride, drive that plane, b—-,” she exclaims.

“She was so calm!!” @888femmefatale reiterated in the caption.

What Actually Happened During The Landing

Shelton, the pilot, was working as a flight instructor at the time, with a student pilot on board as her passenger, Fox10 reported.

Air traffic control audio captured the emergency unfolding in real time. Shelton first reported a burning oil smell in the cockpit, then confirmed the oil pressure was dropping into the red with fumes filling the cabin.

“We would like to go ahead and declare an emergency. We’re losing our engine. I don’t know if we’re gonna make it to the airport,” she told controllers, before confirming she was diverting to the interstate: “We are not making the airport; we are going down on I-10.”

A truck driver’s dashcam captured the landing itself, and Shelton can be heard on the audio navigating around traffic as she lined up with the highway.

No one was hurt, and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the emergency landing.

Nicole Gill, the mother of Shelton’s boyfriend, told Fox10 she spoke with Shelton afterward and was struck by how tight the margin actually was.

“Had she gone over it, she very well might have ended up where she’s in traffic, versus that very small gap that she actually had to get over that truck but under the sign,” Gill said, referring to the highway sign Shelton flew beneath.

Tommy Lee, a former Army pilot and founder of the nonprofit Pilots for Christ, told the outlet Shelton’s response reflected standard emergency training.

“Anytime there’s an emergency, they teach you two things, fly the plane and grab the checklist.”

Gill said Shelton is working as a flight instructor to build hours toward a career as a regional airline pilot and has since set up a GoFundMe to help cover her expenses while she does.

Eric Jordan, the truck driver whose dashcam captured the landing, told CNN it was “a miracle,” explaining that if he hadn’t spotted the plane’s shadow over his truck in time to slow down, it “would have been in the side of the cab.”

The FAA confirmed two people were on board at the time, and the pilot, flight student, and drivers on the highway were all uninjured.

Shelton, who has logged roughly 1,300 hours of total flight time, according to WEAR, later credited her training directly.

“I feel my training has prepared me exceptionally well for this moment,” she told WEAR . “I’ve practiced this exact scenario many times, just never thought I’d actually have to execute it in real life.”
