- He claims that Jordan “has not done anything for the black community because he cares too much about his shoe sales.”
Boston Celtics center Enes Canter made an appearance on CNN over the weekend and used it as an opportunity to take shots at Michael Jordan’s contributions to his community. The Turkish-born Kanter said that Jordan “has not done anything for the black community because he cares too much about his shoe sales.” Kanter has also been critical of LeBron James in recent weeks, even wearing sneakers depicting LeBron being crowned by Chinese president Xi Jinping.
Following Kanter’s comments, basketball fans took to Twitter, asking why Kanter feels entitled to speak for the Black community, while also pointing out that Jordan has done plenty for his community, including funding health clinics for individuals with little or no health insurance.
“LeBron James is one of them, but not many people are talking about Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan hasn’t done anything, nothing, for the Black community in America besides just giving them money,” Kanter said.
“I feel like we need to call out these athletes. At least LeBron James is going out there and being the voice of oppressed people in America, but Michael Jordan has not done anything for the Black community because he cares too much about his shoe sales all over the world. I feel like we need to call out these athletes and not be scared of who they are.”
We as black people didn’t ask Enes Kanter to speak for us

For the record Michael Jordan has bankrolled two low cost clinics in the blackest remaining areas of Charlotte.
Enes Kanter needs to sit down, it’s embarrassing at this point. https://t.co/8VnfFsamia

Enes Kanter is a clout chaser. Dude attacking Nike while his employer signs multi billion dollar contracts with them. He’s not attacking the NBA but only one man lol. If he was really bout it he would quit the NBA but he’s just talking.

This is intense gaslighting. Enes Kanter tries to feign Solidarity with Black community by hitting an easy target, Michael Jordan, for profiteering while wearing a shirt that says "Taiwan is not part of China"- a slogan that makes US military contractors jump for joy. https://t.co/KR18ry2hQu

While Enes Kanter deserves credit for his outspoken criticism of the Turkish and Chinese governments, that still doesn’t give him the right to speak for a community that’s not his own.
