It’s been close to 15 years to the day since the final episode of Entourage aired and more than a decade since the cast reunited for a movie. Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier recently linked back up for a commercial for Jake Paul’s betting platform, and the creator of the show made it very clear he did not give the spot his seal of approval.

In 2004, HBO found itself with a new hit on its hands thanks to Entourage, the series that chronicled the saga of Adrian Grenier’s Vincent Chase and the group of friends who reaped the benefits of being in the inner circle of the fictional actor while navigating the messy world of Hollywood.

It’s hard to appreciate how big of a sensation Entourage was unless you watched its eight seasons unfold in real-time.  Its legacy has been relitigated to the point where there isn’t much left to say about how well or poorly it’s aged, but it still managed to leave a lasting mark on many viewers who ate up the escapism and wish fulfillment it offered.

You also can’t talk about Entourage without talking about Ari Gold, the character who firmly defines Jeremy Piven’s acting career. It’s pretty obvious he was channeling the super agent in a new commercial where he teamed back up with Grenier, and the man who brought Entourage into the world was not exactly thrilled with that development.

Entourage creator Doug Ellin was not a fan of a “garbage” Betr ad featuring Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier

The final episode of Entourage aired on September 11, 2011, and the cast got together for one last ride to film the movie that was released in the summer of 2015.

Piven and Grenier haven’t appeared on screen together since then, but that changed this week when they were both featured in a three-and-a-half-minute spot for Betr, which also featured an appearance from its co-founder, Jake Paul.

Piven may not have technically been playing Ari, but it’s pretty obvious what the ad was going for by having him step into the role of a fast-talking, insult-slinging loudmouth who entered a party where he trades words with Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball, Le’Veon Bell, and Paul before tracking down Grenier to pitch a movie.

Given the parallels, you might think Doug Ellin, the man credited as the creator of Entourage, had a hand in the commercial. However, went out of his way to stress that was definitely not the case while firing off a couple of tweets where he criticized the writing and asserted it amounted to “theft.”

It seems like Piven and Grenier may be at the center of Betr’s marketing efforts going forward, and it’s hard to imagine Ellin is going to be thrilled if that ends up being the case.
