Starbucks, McDonald's and Dunkin' cups
Fast food restaurants are usually not the best place to grab a meal if you’re counting calories. There tends to be plenty of them packed into the food they serve, but in most cases, some of the drinks they offer boast more than anything else on the menu.
These are the fast food drinks that contain the most calories
I recently decided to comb through the menus at the most popular fast food chains in the United States to see what items contained the highest number of calories, and I put together a list where I excluded drinks after realizing they tended to be the top offender more often than not.
However, I figured I might as well take the time to give them the credit they deserve.
It should go without saying that the calorie counts here apply to the largest size you can order, and while I’m going to try to focus on permanent menu items as opposed to those available for a limited time, I reserve the right to deviate from that formula when I see fit.
S’Mores/Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino at Starbucks: 590 Calories

Starbucks doesn’t really go toe-to-toe with the rest of the restaurants on this list. However, I felt obligated to include the chain as a glorified honorable mention, as I figured plenty of people would be curious to see which of its drinks reign supreme.
You won’t be shocked to learn Frappuccinos take the crown, and when it comes to the current lineup, none of them have more calories than the venti version of the S’More and Mocha Cookie Crumble variety.
Chocolate Milkshake at Burger King: 721.7 Calories

Burger King was the only restaurant on this list that got very specific when it comes to determining how many calories its offerings contain, and its chocolate milkshake beat out strawberry by exactly 2.1.
Chocolate Shake at McDonald’s: 800 Calories

No sandwich at McDonald’s packs more calories than the 740 you’ll be treating yourself to if you down a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese.
However, there’s even more available in liquid form in the form of a large chocolate shake; vanilla takes the silver with 780, while strawberry earns the bronze at 470.
Chocolate/Strawberry Malt at Whataburger: 920 Calories

There aren’t many chains on this list that have a food item that contains more calories than its heftiest drink, but Whataburger checks that box thanks to the Mushroom Swiss Burger, which contains 1,100 of them.
However, the chocolate and strawberry versions of its malt are also nothing to scoff at.
French Vanilla Swirl Coffee Chiller with Cream at Dunkin’: 1,000 Calories

As of this writing, a large Fluffernutter Coffee Chiller offers more calories than any item on the menu at Dunkin’ with 1,140. However, it is a limited-time offering.
The same cannot be said for the large French Vanilla Swirl version of the same drink, which clocks in at exactly 1,000 calories if you opt for cream as your dairy of choice. That is admittedly a fairly insane option, and you can easily cut some if you opt for whole milk (760) or skim (710) instead.
Loaded Chocolate Cookies & Cream Shake at Shake Shack: 1,160

Shake Shack is somewhat ironically known more for its burgers than the beverage in its name, but those creamy treats are the biggest offenders on its menu when it comes to calories.
A standard Cookies and Cream shake will set you back 850 calories, but that number rises by more than 35% if you opt for the “Loaded” option.
Peanut Butter Shake at Dairy Queen: 1,250 Calories

There aren’t many foods that pack more calories into a serving than peanut butter, and this shake at Dairy Queen is the first of a few offerings on this list that highlight that reality.
Chocolate Shake at White Castle (In Arizona): 1,380

For reasons I can’t entirely grasp, the calorie content of the milkshakes at White Castle varies depending on the city and state where they’re ordered.
Chocolate does tend to be the most calorie-laden flavor, and while a large one purchased in Minneapolis “only” features 880 calories, that number rises to 1,380 if you get one in Arizona (20 more than those sold in Louisville and Nashville).
Oreo Peanut Butter Shake at Sonic: 1,480 Calories

As I mentioned while I was discussing Dairy Queen, peanut butter is a bit of a cheat code when it comes to boosting calories, and I guess the same can be said for crushing up Oreos and incorporating them into something.
Sonic harnessed both of those strategies for this milkshake, and it is certainly reflected in the final calorie count.
Peanut Butter Malt at Culver’s

I could say something about the peanut butter malt at Culver’s, but I think I’m just going to let the nutrition label speak for itself.

That’s also before taking any toppings or mix-ins into consideration, including some that could add 200 calories (or more) to the total.
Dubai Chocolate Inspired Shake at Baskin Robbins: 1,990 Calories

USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect
As I said before, I’m primarily focusing on permanent menu items, and the Peanut Butter ‘n Chocolate Milkshake at Baskin Robbins is no slouch with 1,580 calories.
However, it has nothing on a limited-edition offering inspired by Dubai chocolate, which boasts “Pistachio Chocolate Bar Ice Cream with milk and pistachio sauce…a rich chocolate drizzle…topped off with a dollop of whipped cream, [even more] pistachio sauce, and crispy kadayif.”
