The body of a woman who was murdered in 1969 and featured in the Netflix true crime documentary The Keepers will be exhumed by the FBI.

The Keepers is seven-episode documentary series that explores the unsolved murder of nun Sister Cathy Cesnik.

Cesnik taught English and drama at Baltimore’s Archbishop Keough High School until she was mysteriously killed and her body was found at a garbage dump. The medical examiner determined that she had died from blunt force trauma.

A priest at the school, Father A. Joseph Maskell, was suspected by Cesnik of sexually abusing multiple students.

Former students of the then 26-year-old Cesnik believe she was killed to hide the truth and that there was a cover-up by authorities.

The Keepers, number two on our 2021 rankings of the 10 Best True Crime Documentaries Netflix Has To Offer, was recently back in the news when the Maryland attorney general released a scathing report about child sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The report named over 150 members of the clergy as abusers and more than 600 children as victims.

Those seeking to uncover the truth about the murder of Cathy Cesnik hoped that the attorney general’s report, the sealed grand jury testimony included in it, and the state of Maryland passing the Child Victims Act in 2023, which removed the statute of limitations for survivors of child sex abuse in the state, would shed new light on her case.

This week, the “>Associated Press reported that FBI investigators announced that they are planning to exhume the body of Joyce Malecki, who was also discussed in The Keepers.

Malecki was a woman who disappeared from a Baltimore shopping center on Nov. 11, 1969. Cathy Cesnik disappeared on Nov. 7, 1969 when she also visited to a local shopping center. Malecki’s body was found near the same location that Cesnik’s was discovered. Her case is also still unsolved.

Malecki also attended a Catholic church outside Baltimore where Father Maskell was a priest and lived down the street from him while he residing in the church’s rectory.

“They want justice out of this thing,” said Kurt Wolfgang, executive director of the Maryland Crime Victims Resource Center, who has been working with the Malecki family. “Even though it was 54 years ago, it would certainly help them to know what happened.”
