A man shared his frustration over the one quality customers who fight for the bill always have.

When you’re a server, having to stand there while patrons performatively argue over paying for the meal sucks. But the one thing that makes it worse is when the customer adds insult to injury and doesn’t tip.

In a TikTok that has garnered 67,800 views, TikTok user Darren Rita (@darrenrita) said, “As a server and a bartender one thing that blows my mind that I do not understand is when a group, a party of people […] three, four six, I don’t care how many—fight over who’s gonna pay the bill, and then that person who inevitably wins that battle doesn’t tip.”

Why Not Tipping Is A Major Issue For Servers

In an emailed statement to BroBible, Rita expanded on his thoughts.

“I posted the video because I personally find it to be a silly phenomenon where people like to posture to their social circle (those they are dining with) that they will graciously pick up a large tab to take care of everyone at the table, while simultaneously NOT taking care of the staff that is taking care of them,” he said.

He adds that he understands why customers have “tipping fatigue” that many have complained about online.

“Tipping in 2026 depending on where and when can be an interesting topic, as more places force the burden of paying their employees onto consumers and I am sympathetic to the very real fatigue that many have,” he shared. “However, when you decide to dine at a sit-down restaurant and be served, that is the system you are agreeing to participate in, and it’s my opinion that you should tip accordingly.”

He continued, “As the rise in think pieces complaining about tipping culture has occurred, I’ve seen more and more people dine-in and stiff coworkers of mine and say ‘it’s not my job to pay you, that’s on the owner and by me not tipping that’ll force them to do that.’ When the reality is by deciding to dine-in at an establishment, the owners have already been paid, by not tipping you only hurt the staff that you are pretending to care about.”

People Knew Exactly What He Was Talking About

Fellow servers took to the comments to commiserate over customers’ so-called “tipping fatigue.”

“It’s ALWAYS the s—– tipper that wins the battle,” one complains.

“And what’s worse is when they used to work there and still don’t tip,” a second wrote.

While a third shared, “I had a party of 7 the other night and the loser of I get to pay came up to me with $40 cash and said I know he’s a c— tipper. Lol. Thank you!”

Additionally, a fourth said, “My rule is whoever approaches me first to pay gets the check. I don’t play. I’ve p—– some people off but having a system is a necessity in dealing with arguing guests.”

While a fifth added, “This is why I’m forever grateful for auto-grauity for large parties.”

What Should Servers Do When Customers Fight Over The Bill?

It’s an awkward moment that every server has encountered at least once. In a post on the r/Serverlife subreddit, one worker asked the internet hive mind about the best course of action (and tipping tricks) if the customers begin with these antics.

“When you have two different people holding their cards out at the same time, trying to one up each other on who pays for dinner, what do you do? How do you choose whose card to take?” they queried.  “It’s always awkward for me when guests do this, but I usually just pick whoever is the most insistent if no one asks first… but sometimes that’s still a toss-up.”

“Run a tip auction,” one suggested. “Start at 20% and increase. Rattle it off like an auctioneer. Majority of the people get a kick out of it. Once it’s resolved, I tell the person who won that they are in no way expected to tip like crazy. It’s just for s—- and giggles.”

“I used to tell people to play rock paper scissors for it,” a second said.

“I’ve joked that they can all pay the full amount,” a third admitted. “I’ll just keep all the extra as a tip. I mean, you all wanted to pay the whole thing anyway, right? This way, each of you pays for the whole meal, and I have a VERY nice day.”

Elsewhere, a fourth said, “One time I had two little old ladies with their grandchildren at a table and they were fighting over it. I told them they had to arm wrestle for it. They kind of moved their stuff out of the way like they were really going to do it, and the kids’ eyes about bulged out of their face lol. I just left the tab on the table and came back a couple minutes later after they sorted it out.”
