A Florida Texas Roadhouse server shared her unpopular opinion of when customers send food back because of specific mistakes.
Serving picky eaters is unavoidable when working in the restaurant industry. Although customers’ food preferences are a top priority for servers, mistakes do slip through the cracks due to the restaurant industry’s fast-paced environment.
However, Texas Roadhouse server Gina (@whatsthatmeen), who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, has an unpopular opinion for those who send food back. “This might be an unpopular opinion; you might disagree with me,” she begins her video.
What’s The Texas Roadhouse Server’s ‘Unpopular Opinion’?
“You go out to eat, and you order a salad with no tomatoes, no croutons. Something that can easily be picked out,” she prefaces. “There’s no allergy, no health condition involved. It’s a preference.”
If the salad arrives with these unwanted toppings, the content creator believes the customer can easily solve the issue on their own. “I think you should just pick them out,” Gina says. “I’m never gonna tell you that as a server.”
She says she considers sending otherwise perfectly good food back to get remade “wasteful” and “maybe entitled.” “The amount of food I see going in the garbage on a daily basis genuinely breaks my heart,” the server says. “It’s insane. The things you see servers bring food back for to dump in the trash. Untouched stuff.”
Then she reveals her beef with customers who take their steak medium-well.
“If you eat your steak medium well, you can eat it well done,” she remarks. “They’re both dry, they’re both tough. Why are we throwing out a whole f—— steak because it tastes exactly the same but has a different color in it?”
Gina reiterates her point in the caption, writing, “I’m not talking about allergies, religious restrictions, or anything that could affect your health. I’m talking about something that’s easy to remove without ruining the food.”
‘Maybe Make It Right The First Time’
Gina’s video accumulated over 12,000 views, and it certainly struck a nerve. Many argued that as paying customers, they have a right to expect their order to arrive correctly the first time.
“I think your kitchen should correctly prepare the food I’m paying for,” one viewer remarked.
“Maybe make it right the first time, but thats just me,” a second criticized.
“Honestly for once I disagree with you. I was a server but also believe if I asked for it without then it shouldn’t have it. I shouldn’t have to pick it out when I asked for it [not to be there],” a third said.
However, there were a few who agreed, understanding her point of view.
“I would just pick it out..not waste the food! Drives me crazy,” one commenter stated.
“I order rare and have only sent it back if it was well done. It’s usually in the medium range and still edible,” another stated.
@whatsthatmeen Unpopular opinion… if you order a salad with no tomatoes or no croutons etc.. and they accidentally put them anyway and you don’t have allergies or a medical reason… just pick them off. 🤷🏻♀️ I’m not talking about allergies, religious restrictions, or anything that could affect your health. I’m talking about something that’s easy to remove without ruining the food. #serverlife #servertok
Are These Reasons To Send Food Back?
Indeed, returning orders back can be acceptable within reason. According to Reader’s Digest, these include:
- When the food is prepared incorrectly (especially when allergies are involved)
- When the meal is served cold
- When meat is cooked to the wrong temperature
When mistakes happen, how a customer voices their complaints is crucial. Customers should immediately alert their server of the mistake and politely explain what the problem is without blaming them. Saying “please” and “thank you” can make a big difference.
If it’s undercooked, the food is likely to be reheated to the right temperature. But for the most part, the returned food is given a one-way ticket to the garbage, and the meal is remade.
