We’re only a few days into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the invasion has already spawned its first urban legend. Within the first couple of days, reports already started to pop up of an ace pilot who was being called the “Ghost of Kyiv”.

The Ghost has already built up quite the reputation. According to reports, The Ghost had already taken down 6 Russian aircraft, making him the first ace pilot in Europe since WW2.

There’s just one problem with urban legends. We never really know how much stock we can put it in them.

In this case, it turns out the legend just might be the real deal. Ukraine’s former president, Petro Poroshenko, has confirmed the existence of the “Ghost of Kyiv”.

The Ghost of Kyiv is one of many incredible stories to come from Ukraine as they’ve attempted to defend their home. There was the ship that refused to surrender to Russian forces. There was the woman who tried to give Russian soldiers sunflower seeds to put in their pockets so flowers would grow when they die.

We’ve also seen former heavyweight boxing champion and mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko and the president of Ukraine,Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stand their ground and volunteer to fight alongside their constituents to try and defend their home.

This week has been a terrifying time for those around the world who are concerned about Russia’s aggression and especially for the people of Ukraine, but individuals like Zelenskyy and The Ghost of Kyiv have proven that the people of Ukraine are prepared to fight for their home.
