Despite being 82-years-old, legendary director Francis Ford Coppola is gearing up to begin making the biggest movie of his career as he’s set to spend $120 million of his own money to make his dream project, Megalopolis.
And because of this, the famed Apocalypse Now filmmaker has now found himself back in the spotlight for the first time in a long time, as evidenced by his recent profile interview with GQ.
During the interview, Coppola — seemingly unprompted — shared his feelings about Marvel movies, and similar to fellow Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, he doesn’t seem to be their biggest fan.
“There used to be studio films. Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different,” Coppola said in a profile interview with GQ.
While it’s difficult to criticize such a titan of filmmaking, it simply must be pointed out that Hollywood copying and pasting itself over and over again is nothing new. Look back to the 90s: everyone was trying to recreate Die Hard. Die Hard on a plane! Or Die Hard on a boat! So on and so forth. Marvel’s just become the brunt of recent criticism because of one reason: its paradigm-shifting success. Adapt or die, or so they say.
