  • Filmmaking legend Francis Ford Coppola has previously spoken out about his distaste for superhero movies.
  • “I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again,” Coppola said back in 2019.
  • The Godfather director has recently revealed he likes one superhero movie, though: Deadpool.

During a recent interview with Variety, legendary The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola — who is gearing up to begin production on his $100M+ passion project Megalopolis — named the one superhero movie that he enjoyed: 2016’s R-rated Deadpool.

While Coppola had previously said back in 2019 that he doesn’t “know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again” when speaking about Marvel movies, the 82-year-old recently revealed that he has an appreciation for the groundbreaking Ryan Reynolds-starring action-comedy. “I liked Deadpool, I thought that was amazing,” Coppola told Variety.

Coppola’s recent comments are certainly a far cry from his previous public opinion of superhero movies, as he stated that “Martin [Scorsese] was kind when he said it’s not cinema — he didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”

It’s certainly been a hell of a couple of weeks for Deadpool as it was announced earlier in March that Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy — who has worked with Reynolds on his last two films, Free Guy and The Adam Project — had been tapped to director Deadpool 3, which will be the first film in the franchise to be made by Marvel Studios and therefore exist within the MCU.

Being the social media savvy dude that he is, Reynolds himself took to Twitter to return the compliment to Coppola by simply saying that Deadpool likes him, too.

At this time, it is unclear when Deadpool 3 — which does not have an official release date — will begin production. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are returning to the franchise after working on the first two massively successful films.
