Yet Another ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off Is In The Works At HBO

HBO

Yet another Game of Thrones project is in the works at HBO, as Variety has learned that an adaptation of Tales of Dunk and Egg is in “early development”. At this time, no talent is attached to the project.

Tales of Dunk and Egg, a prequel set 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, would be a one-hour show based on the series of fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg).

Martin has published three novellas in the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” series to date: “The Hedge Knight” in 1998, “The Sworn Sword” in 2003, and “The Mystery Knight” in 2010. The three novellas were then collected and published together as “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” in 2015.

No writer or talent is currently attached to the project, but sources say it is a high priority for HBO as the premium cabler looks to build on the success of “Game of Thrones.” [via Variety]

Tales of Dunk and Egg would be the second Game of Thrones prequel in development at HBO, as House of the Dragon — which will tell the story of the Targaryen Civil War that takes place 300 years before Game of Thrones — is set to be released in 2022.

Fans of been hoping HBO would adapt Tales of Dunk and Egg for some time, and based on the instant reactions on social media, excitement about the project remains high:

Now, to be clear, just because this series is in development does not mean it’s guaranteed to happen: back in 2019, a Naomi Watts-starring Game of Thrones prequel even got as far as shooting its pilot before HBO ultimately decided to pass on the project.

Don’t expect HBO’s Game of Thrones expansion to end here, as Entertainment Weekly is reporting that their idea is to “go big on Thrones for HBO and HBO Max, not entirely unlike how Disney has done with Star Wars and Disney+.”
