The Little Mermaid had its world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night, and star Halle Bailey showed up to the event in a stunning blue dress. The film is set to be the first major film role of Bailey’s career, having previously gotten her start on YouTube and in music.

Born in the year 2000 in Georgia, Bailey’s career began when she and her sister Chloe Bailey launched a YouTube channel. From there Bailey began to embark on a career in both acting and music. Thus far, Balley has nine film credits to her name, although about half of them are in short films and music videos.

Bailey has a handful of television credits as well, having appeared on shows such as Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Grown-ish. In addition to The Little Mermaid, Bailey is also signed on to star in the upcoming remake of The Color Purple as young Nettie Harris and as Annabelle Bascom in The Line.

Here is the official synopsis for The Little Mermaid, which hits theaters on May 26, via Disney:

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.

While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

In addition to Bailey as the iconic Little Mermaid, the film also stars Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, Noma Dumezweni, and Art Malik

Halle Bailey’s Instagram account is certainly worth the follow, as evidenced by the over 4.6 million people who currently do so.
