New details have emerged about the circumstances of Hayden Panettiere’s untimely death. Panettiere, 36 years old, reportedly died after taking just one pill laced with the deadly drug fentanyl.

According to law enforcement sources who spoke to TMZ, actress Hayden Panettiere died on August 16 after taking a single oxycodone pill that had been laced with fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a powerful man-made synthetic opioid drug that is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine — an extremely small amount, comparable to just a few grains of sand or table salt, can constitute a lethal dose. Drug traffickers and dealers mix fentanyl into powders or press it into Counterfeit Prescription Pills primarily to maximize profits, stretch their inventory, and exploit the drug’s extreme potency and addictive nature.

While toxicology results are still pending — the process can take up to 12 weeks — law enforcement sources told TMZ they believe fentanyl contamination is the cause of death.

Panettiere was found in cardiac arrest at her home in Greenville, South Carolina. Narcan was administered at the scene. The DEA joined the investigation shortly after, as previously reported, and authorities are actively investigating her alleged supplier. No foul play is suspected despite the presence of her ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson.

Panettiere was not a first-time or naive user, as she had spoken openly about her struggles with opioid addiction and alcohol in her memoir and in interviews, and had been in and out of treatment. Director Griff Furst, who worked with Hayden Panettiere on his 2025 film A Breed Apart, said in a video on Instagram that her team had approached him about participating in an intervention after production wrapped.

Panettiere — best known for her work in projects such as the TV series Heroes and Nashville, and the Scream franchise — is survived by her daughter Kaya, who lives in Ukraine with her father, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
