Two women went to a hibachi restaurant. When the chef offered to pour something in their mouths, they realized it wasn’t a complimentary shot of alcohol. Viewers are now calling out the chef after learning what the substance was.
In her video, TikToker Jenna (@jean.bean17) sits around a hibachi grill at Kobe Steakhouse in San Marcos, Texas, with her friend. The chef holds a squeeze bottle of a yellow liquid and signals for one of the women to open her mouth.
The chef pours the liquid for several seconds as the woman’s face contorts in disgust. When he stops pouring, she appears to gag before swallowing the liquid.
The hibachi chef moves onto the next woman, who also receives a slightly clearer liquid, presumably sake. Then, the women realize what was in the first bottle.
On-screen text reads, “Tb to when the hibachi chef poured straight canola oil down my throat.”
The first woman grills the chef, shouting, “What was that?” He replies, “Oil.” She gets up to excuse herself from the table, remarking that she might “throw up.”
Is It Normal For Hibachi Chefs To Pour Something In Your Mouth?
Hibachi restaurants are known for putting on a theatrical performance for diners, which usually includes fiery tricks, playing with the food before serving, and more. It’s not uncommon for hibachi chefs to offer to pour a shot of sake, which they use for cooking, into of-age customers’ mouths.
On the r/AskCulinary subreddit, surprised customers react to the practice.
“I moved 10 years ago to the east coast from the midwest and was caught off guard by the sake squirt! It is fun though!” one wrote.
Another said, “I just went for the first time and I loved the sake I had it twice. I’ve had dry sake and it’s much stronger and more bitter. This was sweeter but not sweet. Wasn’t very strong either.”
In a comment, the TikToker clarified that the chef had simply mixed up the bottles of oil and sake and didn’t intentionally give her the former. A commenter asked if the restaurant “apologized or took care of the bill.” She replied, “Yes.”
Do Viewers Think She Should Escalate the Situation?
In the comments, viewers point out that canola oil isn’t meant for drinking. Just one tablespoon of the frying oil can have around 120 calories per serving. Plus, it may have laxative effects for some people, according to Everyday Health.
“Boy I knew them trips to the bathroom on the following days was all slip n slide,” a commenter joked.
A second added, “She’s definitely going to be sick… that’s absolutely not funny and he took it way too far.”
Some suggested that she should seek compensation for the mistake.
“Uh yeah, you should look into some type of compensation,” one wrote.
“Girl I’m honestly so mad and disgusted! He knew what he was using and that’s so harmful. Throwing up oil for 2 days? Not okay. Did you see a doctor? Please get a lawyer and sue immediately,” another said in a comment that was liked by Jenna.
A third pointed out, “That coulda been dangerous if u woulda choked or accidentally inhaled any oil it could kill u . Ppl have died from oil in their lungs.”
