Dating in this day and age is complicated. If you’re after a fling or just want more stories to laugh about with your friends, finding a connection is easy. But for people who actually want a long-term relationship—and are relying on dating apps to find it—it’s not so simple.
In fact, a recent study shows just how real the dating app burnout is. Among adults aged 18 to 25, a whopping 82% of those surveyed said they met their romantic partner in real life, not online.
Even Gen Z is feeling it: Just 23% of 18–29-year-olds said they found love through dating apps.
These statistics make all the more sense whenever we hear dating site horror stories, like the one TikTok creator Cait (@bangbangskrimpp) shared recently on the platform.
A Horrific Hinge Date
In her video, which has garnered over 361,300 views, Cait explains how her seemingly normal Hinge fling spiraled, one date at a time, into chaos.
According to her, she’d gone out with the man in question a few times before. He was significantly older, which she initially took as a good sign.
But looking back, she now says, “They’re not any different. If anything, they’re f—— worse.”
One day, when he invited her out on a boat, she says she hesitated at first.
“I just don’t like the idea of being stuck with a bunch of people,” she says.
But eventually, Cait says she agreed.
However, when she showed up at his house to meet the group, she says things took a turn as she was greeted by three women in bikinis.
“‘Are you Hugh Hefner?'” she recalls thinking. “‘The f— is going on?'”
While chatting with the other women on the boat, she recalls one of them asking her how serious things were with the Hinge date. She says she explained they’d gone out a few times, nothing major.
That’s when she says the woman hit her with, “‘I f—– him last weekend.'” As if that wasn’t enough, that woman pointed to another woman on the boat and said, “‘She’s on a Hinge date with him right now,'” Cait recounts.
Despite the awkwardness, the girls got along. But when she found out he had invited all three women to sleep over in his two-bedroom home that night, she says she knew it was time to check out emotionally.
“I just end up doing my own thing,” Cait says. “End up becoming friends with one of the girls. Love her.”
She Cut Him Off—Then Went On One Last Date Anyway
Even after the boat incident, Cait says the man kept calling and texting, claiming things weren’t what they seemed. Eventually, he asked her to go to a baseball game.
“I was like, ‘I really shouldn’t,'” she says. “But did I? Yeah, I did,” she admits, explaining it was a “last hoorah” before moving in three weeks.
At the game, everything was fine—until he asked what the plan was for the night. “‘You’re driving me home, and I’m going home alone, my love,'” she says she told him. That’s when his whole vibe shifted, she explains.
On top of that, she says he’d been drinking the entire time—whiskey in the truck, beers at the game, and shots later on.
“‘I need to get home safely,'” she recalls thinking. “‘My dog needs a mother.'”
Then He Got Stuck In Her Driveway
Cait says her Hinge date eventually dropped her off. But as soon as she got inside, the calls started.
“‘My truck won’t start,'” he reportedly told her.
Even though she told him to figure it out, after a whole lot of back-and-forth and complaining, Cait says she eventually let him crash in the guest room.
In the morning, he claimed he’d need hours to get a new battery. “I was like, ‘Try and go start the truck, please,'” she says.
And finally, “It worked,” she says. “The b—- is working!”—implying he was lying the entire time about the truck not starting.
The second he drove off, Cait says she blocked the Hinge date for good.
@bangbangskrimpp all in all don’t date a man old enough to be your father #hinge #storytime
Problems That May Come With Age-Gap Relationships
According to psychologists, relationships between older men and younger women often come with built-in power imbalances.
While each relationship is different, a significant gap in life experience, financial independence, or emotional maturity can easily tilt the balance in one partner’s favor—usually the older one.
One key concern may be consent—not in the legal sense, but in terms of how freely and confidently the younger person can navigate the relationship.
When one person controls the money, sets the plans, or simply knows how to manipulate situations better, it becomes harder to know if the younger partner is genuinely on equal footing.
That’s not to say age-gap relationships are always doomed. Like any other pairing, strong communication and mutual respect can go a long way.
The Hard Truth
In the comments, viewers offered a mix of advice and hard truths for Cait.
Some were dubious of older men in general.
“If a man is 40+, relatively attractive, successful, and single, it’s for a reason,” one person stated. “Either by design or massive character flaw.”
“Older just means they’ve had more time to practice their game,” said another.
Others doubted the truck story from the jump.
“You should have told him you called a tow truck, then see if his truck would start,” one user suggested.
“Never believed his truck was broken for a second,” someone added.
Another chimed in with concern, writing, “Girl you let him in your house???? Please, please, please, please don’t do that again.”
