In the early hours of Tuesday, October 5, HBO and HBO Max — somewhat quietly considering the hour, as the teaser was tweeted at 5:29 a.m. — released the first trailer for House of the Dragon, the first of the network’s many Game of Thrones prequels.

The series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, is set to follow the civil war between Prime Aegon II and Princess Rhaenyra that destroyed House Targaryen. The series was co-created by A Song of Ice & Fire scribe George R.R. Martin and screenwriter and Colony creator Ryan Condal.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, though, some Game of Thrones fans — who are still rightfully angry with the way the once-beloved series came to a shockingly haphazard close back in the Summer of 2019 — still aren’t quite ready to return to the fire and blood soaked world of Westeros, as evidenced by some of the reactions to the House of the Dragon teaser:

Still, despite the somewhat dismissive attitude of fans, House of the Dragon will likely be a massive hit for HBO as the power of the fantasy genre, particularly when it’s tied to Game of Thrones, is undeniable. Just look at Amazon Prime Video, who will be releasing The Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings within the coming years, or Netflix, who’s found success with the likes of The Witcher and Shadow & Bone.

House of the Dragon, will feature an ensemble cast that stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, and more, will hit HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
