Most parents won’t think twice about putting themselves in harm’s way to protect their children and family. That was certainly the case with one man in Idaho, who went toe-to-toe with an animal that attempted to break into his daughter’s bedroom before his wife (and their dog) joined the fray.

Idaho is home to upwards of 30,000 black bears along with a relatively small population of an estimated 100 grizzlies (the latter of which primarily reside in its northern tip and the section of Yellowstone National Park on the border of Montana and Idaho).

They don’t typically pose a major threat to humans, as there hasn’t been a single fatal attack recorded in the state for well over a century. However, there has been a rise in sightings and encounters in residential areas in 2026, which experts say is linked to a drought that has led to similar increases in a number of states in the western part of the country this year.

Those numbers are only expected to keep rising as those mammals scavenge for all of the food they can get their paws on in anticipation of hibernation, and one more was added to the pile due to what transpired in the Gem State last week.

Black bears are typically less aggressive than their brown counterparts, but both of those species tend to get a bit bolder when they enter hyperphagia, the yearly phase where they spend a couple of months packing on as many pounds as possible before hibernating in the winter.

People who live in Bear Country need to be particularly cautious when it comes to protecting potential sources of food during that time of the year, and you also need to make sure your doors and windows are locked tight due to the risk of particularly daring animals attempting to gain access to a house in search of a meal.

According to East Idaho News, that was the situation a family in the mountain town of Salmon encountered early in the morning of Friday, October 2nd. Brian and Kim Heidemann were awoken around 3 A.M. by their 14-year-old daughter, who told them she’d spotted a bear standing on a cooler outside her bedroom window that was trying to make its way inside.

The outlet notes that three bears (a mother and two cubs) had been causing issues in the area for a couple of weeks, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game had set up traps that failed to do their intended job before things took a scary turn.

One of those cubs was the bear that attempted to get through the window before it managed to enter the Heidemanns’ home through the back door, and Brian came face-to-face with the animal as it was standing on the threshold.

He didn’t waste any time literally leaping into action, as he “launched himself toward the bear” before landing in the backyard. He continued to grapple with it before his wife came to his aid, and their dog, a pitbull boxer mix named Lulu, also got in on the action before the invader ran away.

At that point, the Heidemanns realized there were actually three bears outside their house, and they were able to retreat to safety before calling 911 (an armed neighbor who heard the commotion fired off a shot that made the bears flee the area).

Brian was ultimately airlifted to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a “bone-deep laceration on his arm” (he also suffered wounds on his head and torso), while Kim and Lulu were treated for minor injuries (the couple’s daughter and her nine-year-old sister were unscathed).

Wildlife officials were able to locate the bears in the wake of the incident, and all three were euthanized after being tracked down.
