Beloved actor and musician Jack Black is ready and willing to return to one of his most iconic roles: Dewey Finn, the rocker-turned-teacher from School of Rock.
There’s only one problem, according to Black: writer Mike White — who, in addition to writing the film, also starred as Ned Schneebly — is too busy making The White Lotus, the hit HBO series that he created and is currently in production on its third season.
“I wish there’d be a ‘School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo,’” Black told Irish outlet Joe while promoting his new film Kung Fu Panda 4. “I’m ready.”
“You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Black is game for a School of Rock sequel as he’s long proclaimed that it’s the film he’s most proud of.
“That’s definitely the movie that I’m most proud of,” Black told GQ a few years ago.
“That’s the one that I felt like all the planets aligned, and when we did the first read-through with the whole cast, it was lightning in a bottle,” he said. “That’s the only time I’ve felt that I was meant to do something. And now the rest is all just gravy and icing, and I can die happy. I’ve got my School of Rock.”

School of Rock, released in 2003, was directed by filmmaker Richard Linklater, who is also known for his work on Dazed and Confused, the Before trilogy with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, Bad News Bears, Boyhood, Everybody Wants Some!!, and more.
Linklater’s newest film, Hit Man stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona and will be released on Netflix on Friday, June 7.
