The first trailer for The Social Reckoning, the sequel to 2010’s The Social Network, has been released. Written by Aaron Sorkin, who’s directing the follow-up, The Social Network is widely considered to be one of the best films of the 2010s.
The Social Reckoning sees Emmy-winning and Academy Award nominated actor Jeremy Strong taking over the role of Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg, who earned himself an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in The Social Network.
Alongside Strong, The Social Reckoning stars Oscar winner Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as reporter Jeff Horwitz. Additional cast members include Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin, and more.
The first trailer for The Social Reckoning, the follow-up to David Fincher’s The Social Network, has been released.
You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for The Social Reckoning — in which they describe it as a “companion piece” to The Social Network and not a sequel — below, via Sony Pictures.
“A companion piece to the hit film The Social Network, Sorkin’s original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”
The Social Network, directed by David Fincher — who did not return to the director’s chair for the follow-up — was based on the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich and told the story of the early days of Facebook, from its founding at Harvard to Facebook achieving 500 million users and Zuckerberg becoming the youngest billionaire in the world.
While the film was far from forgiving of Zuckerberg, it also portrayed him with plenty of empathy, which doesn’t seem like it will be the case in The Social Reckoning.
The Social Reckoning will be released in movie theaters in the United States on October 9.
