A new method of stealing jewelry has been unlocked, and it involves your intestinal tract.
Elegance Jewellers (@elegancejewellers), a London-based jewelry store, uploaded footage of the surreal theft attempt on TikTok, which was captured by the establishment’s security cameras.
In the clip, a man shows off the unusual way he conceived of stealing a $46,353 ring.
At the onset of the video, footage from inside of the jewelry store shows the man, who is rocking a blue button-up shirt and blazer, seated at a table as he inspects the ring.
He makes a motion with his right hand, as if to pantomime putting the costly piece of jewelry back. However, camera footage clearly shows that the ring is still in the man’s left hand, which he puts to his mouth. In a second, the ring disappears into his mouth.
A text overlay in the clip confirms this. “You’re showing a customer a £35,000 ring and the trumpets start getting louder…” it reads.
Furthermore, the video’s caption also indicates that the man did indeed ingest the ring. “Why did he swallow it?” the message asks.
After the bizarre interaction, the ring-gulper leans forward to listen to the man sitting across from him. He then appears to have picked up another ring. Following this, he sits back in his seat, holds it up to his ring finger, and then the clip comes to a close.
‘New Rules Made Because Of This Man’
Commenters who replied to Elegance’s clip were shocked, amused, and incredulous. One penned, “I’ll get it back in 2 to 5 business days ahh scheme.”
Someone else shared how they would have handled the situation had a customer they were assisting behaved this way. “Well sir I see you made your choice! Wonderful, now if you could walk with me to the register please?” they quipped.
Another person asked what law enforcement protocols are in place, if any, for when a person swallows your wares. “Wtf do you do in this situation?” they asked.
Others speculated as to what would probably go down in this scenario.
“Pretty sure the usual protocol is holding him in a jail cell or medical observation until he [poop emoji] on a strainer,” one said.
The London-based jewelry store didn’t make commenters wait too long for a storytime. In a video posted to its Instagram account, a store employee detailed what went down.
“When my colleague noticed that there was a ring missing, we confronted him, but he denied it. After he denied it, we had a look on CCTV, and caught him in the act,” the worker says. “After we told him that we’d called the police, he managed to gag the ring back out.”
The store is now using the situation to promote its brand.
“He was clearly after the best rings in London. So if you’d like to get yourself an engagement ring, come down to Elegance. Just please don’t swallow our rings,” she says.
Not The First Time
Wildly, there have been other thieves who’ve tried this tactic to walk away with expensive jewels for free. On March 5, 2025, NBC News reported that a Florida man allegedly burgled $770,000 worth of Tiffany’s diamond earrings. He reportedly told workers that he was personally shopping for an Orlando Magic basketball player. This prompted employees to take him to a VIP section of the store, where they showed him diamond earrings with eye-watering price tags.
One 4.86 carat set cost a whopping $160,000. Another two 8.19 carat diamond studs were going for $609,000, along with a 5.61 carat diamond ring.
The man allegedly snatched the earrings and took off in his blue Mitsubishi Outlander and high-tailed it back to Texas. However, Florida State Highway Patrol officers managed to apprehend him. When they did, the man allegedly tossed the earrings into his mouth and swallowed nearly a million dollars worth of diamonds.
He was subsequently x-rayed, and sure enough, the “foreign objects [were seen] in his stomach.”
An affidavit pertaining to the incident stated, “These foreign objects are suspected to be the Tiffany & Co. earrings taken in the robbery but will need to be collected … after they pass through [the man’s] system.”
