John Mayer Admits ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ Isn’t About Jennifer Love Hewitt

John Mayer recently sat down with Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper.

It seems like the Internet’s overwhelming takeaway from John Mayer‘s Call Her Daddy appearance is ‘I didn’t know I needed this but I did.’ And the biggest revelation is his breakout song ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ is about a real person but not Jennifer Love Hewitt.

(4:30) – high school john was ‘probably the best version of himself’ and said he only had one girlfriend ‘before everything changed in (his) life.’ And he admits he reached back out to that HS girlfriend several times but that girlfriend was married with kids.

(7:56) – Alex Cooper asks John about ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ and says he was dating someone at the time. John counters that he wasn’t dating anyone at the time and that song was actually about his first girlfriend, ‘Marie’.

Mayer he says it was ‘about the feeling which was already nostalgic’. Adding that he was 21 at the time he wrote YBIAW and he was already nostalgic for being 16 again.

John Mayer says it was ‘one of those things where people just formed that idea that gets reinforced over the years.’ In this case, the rumor was always that ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ was written about Jennifer Love-Hewitt.

John says he ‘had never met a celebrity (he) wrote that song.’ Thus closing the door on the rumor it was about JLH.

An interesting follow-up is if John Mayer’s high school girlfriend knew that he wrote that song about her and he thinks maybe she didn’t. Even to this day. But she’s definitely finding out via the news right now which is funny to think that it’ll be a topic brought up at the dinner table on Christmas Eve.

Interestingly, he says he’s made a rule or ‘always had a rule’ that he doesn’t ‘write songs about people.’ He doesn’t ‘write them for people or about people.’ Adding that he ‘might use a relationship that inspires (him) to write something.’

John made mention of it only being six years between his high school girlfriend ‘Marie’ and when he got super famous for ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’ and how surreal that seemed to him.

It’s not exactly common to see someone like John Mayer bust out his guitar and start playing songs during an interview but here he does. He picks up the guitar around 50 minutes into the interview.

Prior to that, Mayer and Alex Cooper talked about his next album. John says he might release it track by track instead of the entire album at once. He said he’s not dating much at the moment but did reflect on doing ‘stupid things’ in his 20s.

At one point, John Mayer says ‘being a famous guy is like being a hot girl’ which is incredibly obvious but I’m glad someone finally said it. That statement led Alex Cooper into her next question which was about ‘why did American break up with John Mayer’ because he recently described himself as ‘America’s ex-boyfriend.’
