Martin Scorsese may be in his late-70s, but he certainly doesn’t act like it, as the man has been as prolific of a filmmaker as there’s been in recent years.

With six feature films and five documentaries under his belt in the last decade, not only has Scorsese continued to produce, but he’s done so at the highest level, as his latest flick The Irishman is set to contend for all of the major awards at this year’s Oscars.

But because Scorsese is a cinematic powerhouse, he’s not going to simply rest on the laurels of The Irishman‘s success, as it’s being reported that his next film — the Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro-starring Killers of the Flower Moon — is set to begin shooting in March.

During our phone conversation in mid-November, Rodrigo Prieto (Scorsese’s cinematographer) was actually in Bartlesville, Oklahoma (where Terrence Malick shot To the Wonder) doing some preliminary camera tests and scouts for Killers of the Flower Moon. He revealed that right now, filming on the project is expected to begin in March 2020.

Obviously things can change, and in the world of moviemaking anything can happen, but that appears to be the targeted start of production for Scorsese’s next movie. It could also explain why DiCaprio backed out of Guillermo del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley, which starts shooting at the same time. [via Collider]

Set in 1920’s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon is about the haunting mass murders of Osage Indian tribe members after valuable oil was discovered under their land. During a period from 1921 to 1926, over 20 members of the Osage tribe were killed, although some reports indicate that the number of deceased was actually north of 100.

Based on the novel of the same name, the film will mark the first time that DiCaprio and De Niro have appeared in a film together since 1996’s Marvin’s Room. In fact, despite both being Scorsese’s muses over the last four decades, the pair has never appeared in a film together that was helmed by the legendary auteur. According to Deadline, De Niro is set to play serial killer William Hale.

The film will mark DiCaprio and Scorsese’s sixth time working together, having previously collaborated on Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.

It will also mark Scorsese and De Niro’s ninth time working together in the last 40 years, having already teamed up for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, and The Irishman.
