A TikToker has gone viral after making a startling discovery in their Salt & Vinegar Lay's bags.
If we put aside the fact that most Lay’s chips are just air these days, they’re a pretty popular snack. But when this TikToker opened her bag of Salt & Vinegar, she was met with something shocking.
After flashing the inside of the bag to viewers, she explained what exactly happened.
“So I just bought this bag of Lay’s chips from Kroger not even two days ago,” she said.
“I open the bag…” she continued, before taking out a large, brown clump. “What is this?”
Continuing to hold on to the clump, hovering it above the bag of chips, she added, “These chips below, I ate one and they taste like moldy and really soggy. Can anybody explain to me what that is, because I’ve never in my life seen that before.”
In the video, she also looked for the expiration date, but was unable to find it. Eventually, she did and shared a picture in the comments section. The chips don’t expire until December 2026.
BroBible reached out to the TikToker via TikTok direct message and PepsiCo via email.
People Had Theories About The Mishap
Most commenters argued that it was the whole potato inside the bag.
“Girl, now you know they’re made of real potatoes,” one quipped.
“That’s a whole damn baked potato,” a second noted.
“It’s a potato that managed to not get cut,” a third said, “Which left moisture in your bag.”
Despite this, other TikTokers admitted to finding the “giga-chip,” as one called it, appealing.
“I would eat that up,” a fourth confessed.
“I’m pretty sure it’s the potato skins,” a fifth guessed, “(Lay’s are made with real potatoes) not gonna lie I would so take a bite of that.”
Then a sixth chimed in, “A salt and vinegar baked potato sounds amazingggg.”
Redditors Have Made Similar Discoveries
In a similar vein, multiple Reddit users on the r/mildlyinteresting subreddit have found whole potatoes in their bags of chips. In the most recent post, the Redditor answered some other users’ questions. When asked if they ate it, they said, “No haha. I wanna cut it open though, I tried a regular chip and another one, and they all seem to be stale so this monstrosity ruined my bag of chips.”
In another reply, they mentioned how they ended up cutting it open. What they discovered was “a mini chunk of hard potato that was in the shape of a walnut sort of.”
In regard to the moldy chips, one Reddit user explained to the original poster how they came to be. “Stale?” they asked. “Bad seal unfortunately, it does happen most get picked up by the machine that tests for air leakage but it could have been tiny. Could also be a lot more moisture from having a whole potato. ”
Meanwhile, under the post, other Redditors further reflected on the discovery.
“Those are really good when they come out of the fryer,” one noted. “Kind of like a deep fried baked potato. Not so great by the time they get to the store.”
“It looks like a petit glazed donut,” a second remarked.
While a third added, “Whoa this is crazy!”
