Sony has released the first trailer for Madame Web, their latest Spider-Man spin-off movie that does not feature Spider-Man, similar to the likes of Venom and Morbius.

Madame Web marks the franchise film debut for Sydney Sweeney, who has become one of Hollywood’s biggest rising stars in recent years thanks to her performance in projects such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Euphoria, The White Lotus, Sharp Objects, and more.

The 26-year-old Sweeney, however, is actually not the star of the film, as that role went to Dakota Johnson (of 50 Shades of Grey fame), who will be playing the titular Madame Web, while Sweeney plays Julia Carpenter / Spider-Woman.

Here is the official synopsis for Madame Web, via Sony Pictures:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

In addition to Johnson and Sweeney, Madame Web also stars Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

Madame Web isn’t the only major project that Sweeney has on the way in the coming months, as she’ll also be starring in the upcoming rom-com Anyone But You alongside Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell. 2023 has also seen Sweeney star in the acclaimed HBO Max film Reality and feature in a Rolling Stones music video.

In the coming years, Sweeney is attached to a remake of the 1960s cult classic sci-fi film Barbarella, Echo Valley, and the third season Euphoria.
