After much speculation, Margot Robbie has finally confirmed the title of the first of up to four movies featuring her as DC Comics supervillain Harley Quinn.
In addition to that, Robbie also revealed the movie’s rating as well as the film’s planned production start date.
With not just one, but as many as FOUR films currently in development for Robbie as Harley Quinn (including Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens and Harley Quinn and The Joker), this first go-round, according to her will be the film in which she is a producer, Birds of Prey.
In a previous interview with Collider this week to promote her latest film, Terminal, Robbie gave us even more insight into what she hopes to see in Birds of Prey.
“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film.” said Robbie. “She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”
Robbie has also addressed the fact that her film will have a female director, Cathy Yan, as well as a female screenwriter in Christina Hodson.
Now, speaking to Flickering Myth’s Freda Cooper, Robbie has confirmed that her Harley Quinn film will go first, be rated R (as she wanted), filming is planned to begin in January 2019, and it will have a smaller budget than previous DC Comics films.
How Harley Quinn is involved with the Birds of Prey comic storyline, in which 21 different characters have been members of the group – none of them Harley Quinn – is still a giant mystery.
There also has yet to be a release date given for the film.
Then there was this…
How do you feel about #BirdsOfPrey being R? I think it's interesting…
1) Fans fell in love with Harley in a PG-13 movie, some will be left out now
2) Batgirl has the potential to inspire young girls just like Wonder Woman. Why put her in a R-rated movie? https://t.co/Mad7USCrC0— Batman-News.com (@BatmanNewsCom) July 8, 2018
Well, that is quite easy to answer because BATGIRL is NOT in #BIRDSOFPREY

Wow really? That’s big news if true. Variety said she was.

They didn't say that on the record, rather Justin tweeted. Profound difference. Was decided recently no Batgirl. Attention to detail, I didn't say Barbara Gordon, I said Batgirl. 😉

#BarbraGordon is Batgirl and Oracle but #Oracle and #Batgirl are different. Oracle manifested after a terrible tragedy she’s darker and tortured no longer the same aspiring wide-eyed hero she was before. There’s a huge shift in her character — fits an R rating

Please don’t let her show up as Oracle before we’ve even seen her as Batgirl 😑

Seriously.
Here’s Margot talking about the movie…
