After the depths of 2020 and 2021 had some fearing that the movie industry was dead and gone, the art form came roaring back in 2022.

Not only were there three separate movies that grossed over $1 billion at the global box office (Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World: Dominion) but the medium was also artistically rich last year, too.

Take the legendary Martin Scorsese’s recent comments about Todd Field’s acclaimed film Tár, for example: during a recent appearance at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Scorsese said that the clouds lifted on cinema’s future when he watched the Cate Blanchett-starring picture.

“For so long now, so many of us see films that pretty much let us know where they’re going. I mean, they take us by the hand, and even if it’s disturbing at times, sort of comfort us along the way that it will be all OK by the end,” Scorsese said.

“Now this is insidious, as one can get lulled into this, and ultimately get used to it. Leading those of us who’ve experienced cinema in the past — as much more than that— to become despairing of the future of the art form, especially for younger generations.”

“But that’s on dark days. The clouds lifted when I experienced Todd’s film, Tár. What you’ve done, Todd, is that the very fabric of the movie you created doesn’t allow this. All the aspects of cinema and the film that you’ve used, attest to this. The shift in locations, for example, the shift in locations alone do what cinema does best, which is to reduce space and time to what they are, which is nothing.” [IndieWire via New York Film Critics Circle Awards]

Scorsese’s next film, Killers of the Flower Moon, will hit theaters sometime next year. His first movie since 2019’s The IrishmanKillers of the Flower Moon stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Robert De Niro, and Brendan Fraser.

As for Tár — Field’s first film since 2006’s Little Children — the film looks likely to score a bevy of Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Field, and Best Actress for Blanchett.
