Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, Hollywood continues to bank on Jared Leto. Masters of the Universe has become the latest example of the error of that thinking.

During its first weekend at the box office, Masters of the Universe opened to $54M globally ($29M domestic) on a $170M–$200M budget, putting it on track to be the biggest bomb of the summer and cost Amazon MGM Studios over $100 million.

Masters of the Universe has become the latest film starring Jared Leto to completely bomb at the box office

Masters of the Universe is the third straight IP movie starring Jared Leto to bomb at the box office, following 2025’s Tron: Ares ($142M at the box office, estimated $200M budget), 2023’s Haunted Mansion ($117M at the box office, $150M budget), and 2022’s Morbius ($167M at the box office, estimated $75 budget).

In general, Leto hasn’t starred in a simultaneously received/successful movie since 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. Since then, he’s starred in the three aforementioned bombs, in addition to Zack Snyder’s Justice League (in a post-credit scene of the straight-to-streaming film), House of Gucci, and The Outsider.

Leto has remained a fixture in Hollywood over the last decade due to his Best Supporting Actor win at the Academy Awards in 2014 for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. The decision to give him that Oscar, however, has not aged well, while nothing in the 12 years has suggested that Leto brings anything to the table that audiences want to see.
