Just because a TikTok trend goes viral doesn’t mean you should try it yourself. Some challenges look deceptively simple when you’re scrolling through your feed, but they can require more strength, skill, or plain luck than they appear.
One New York woman learned that lesson the hard way after attempting a popular challenge that sent her straight to the emergency room.
TikTok Trend Lands Woman In ER
In a series of videos with more than 1.6 million combined views, popular content creator Amanda Diaz (@amandadiaz) documented a TikTok trend gone wrong.
The final video shows her outside an emergency room, about to walk in.
“Ofc this would happen to me,” the text overlay reads.
The footage then shows her being rolled around in a wheelchair inside the hospital and eventually hopping out with one foot in a brace.
“I am never attempting a tik tok trend again,” she wrote in the caption.
How Did This Happen?
It all started when Diaz decided to try the viral Maui Wowie trend, which involves hanging off street crossing lights or scaffolding while mouthing along to the song, then dropping down to the ground.
In her initial video, she jumps off the street light, seemingly sticking the landing, but in the caption, she hinted at trouble.
“I am never attempting this again HAHAHA,” she said.
A follow-up video revealed the extent of her injuries.
“I was never sporty, and this proves it. I did the Maui Wowie thing today. Guess who messed up her ankle and pulled her shoulder,” she says in the clip. “I can’t even carry my body weight clearly. I need to work my arms out more.”
In the video, she says she needs to apply Icy Hot to multiple injured areas.
“This is my situation right now. On my shoulder, my lower back, and my ankle. Because guess who messed that up? This girl right here,” she adds.
What Is The Maui Wowie Trend?
The Maui Wowie trend has people hanging off street signs and traffic lights while lip-syncing to a Kid Cudi song.
The trend started when TikToker @aaronxbrownn posted a video of himself hanging from a street sign on September 6, 2025, The Tab reported. There was no particular reason for it, but other users started copying him, and it quickly turned into a viral challenge.
The song itself is Kid Cudi’s track of the same name from his 2008 mixtape A Kid Named Cudi. The sound had been used 75,000 times on TikTok as of this article, and even Kid Cudi himself posted a video hanging from a traffic light.
“Yeaaaaaaaaaa thank you to everyone for posting my song and having fun and showing love!!! 17 years old and timeless,” he wrote in the caption.
While the trend might look simple, Diaz’s experience shows it requires more upper-body strength and coordination than it appears. Hanging from street infrastructure and dropping down carries obvious risks, from the height of the fall to the physical demands of supporting your own body weight.
Commenters React
“Owwie wowie,” a top comment read.
“As a nursing student the first thing I saw looking at this was high fall risk. Then you started hopping the stairs and I DIED,” a person said.
“Hopping down the steps of the ER is insanity,” another wrote.
