Meta AI smart glasses for every blind veteran in America

Meta / Facebook

Meta CEO and Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a major initiative today: Meta is donating a pair of AI-enabled Meta Smart Glasses to every blind veteran in America. This program was inspired by US Army veteran Don Overton who lost his eyesight in Operation Desert Storm.

The AI-enabled Meta Smart Glasses will be able to revolutionize how veterans who have lost their eyesight interact and interface with the world. With the Smart Glasses as AI assistants, the glasses will be able to read documents for them and transcribe aloud, help navigate surroundings, and provide a renewed sense of independence.

Mark Zuckerberg And Meta Announce Every Blind Veteran In America Can Receive Free Meta Smart Glasses

Earlier today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this incredible donation on his personal Facebook page. He shared a video explaining how Meta is partnering with Blinded Veterans Association to help train blind veterans how to use the Meta Smart Glasses and maximize their potential to get the most out of these potentially life-changing tools.

In a press release, Meta announced that there are more than 130,000 legally blind veterans in America who are now all immediately eligible for free Meta Smart Glasses. All they need to do in order to claim them is the Blind Veterans Association website where there is a landing page set up to facilitate this partnership.

Meta announced they will support this potentially life-changing partnership for blind veterans with an array of resources, including:

— “Monthly webinars: The Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) hosts monthly live webinars in partnership with TechSoup, where veterans can ask questions and receive real-time troubleshooting support.”
— “In-person events: Meta and partner organizations host events across the country where veterans can receive their glasses, get hands-on guidance from trained staff, and connect with other participants in the program.”
— “BVA Training Guide: BVA has developed a training guide specifically for blind and low-vision veterans that covers activating voice commands, reading documents, answering phone calls, and navigating daily tasks with greater autonomy.”

Following the announcement, Brigadier General (USA, Ret.) Tom Landwermeyer, President and CEO of Homes For Our Troops released a statement about Meta’s initiative to bring free AI-enabled Smart Glasses to every blind veteran in the country. He said: “at Homes For Our Troops, the most important part of our mission is to enable severely injured post-9/11 Veterans to rebuild their lives and reclaim their independence and dignity.”

Brigadier General (USA, Ret.) Tom Landwermeyer continued, saying “we are proud to partner with Meta on this innovative initiative, bringing Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses to the blind Veterans we serve. Technology has the power to break down barriers and create new opportunities, and this partnership represents another meaningful step toward helping our Veterans engage more fully with the world around them. Together with Meta, we are expanding possibilities, restoring freedom and independence, and supporting our Veterans as they build brighter futures in their homes and the communities where they have chosen to live.”
