Have you ever been so poor that you take your couch apart to find cash so that you can afford to buy a Crunchwrap Supreme from Taco Bell? You may find some chump change that dribbled out of your pocket during a Sunday of binge-watching Bojack Horseman. But what would happen if you found $43,000 in your couch that wasn’t yours? Would you return the money to the rightful owner? One man was honest enough to give the money back.

In December, Michigan man purchased a used couch at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Owosso. Howard Kirby moved the sofa into his man cave. Kirby had the ottoman for a few weeks and noticed that the furniture was uncomfortable. Kirby’s daughter-in-law unzipped the cushion and opened it up, where she found thousands of dollars in the box.

The Kirby’s found a total of $43,170 in the ottoman cushion. “It still boggles my mind,” Kirby said. “I still have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming or something.”

An attorney informed Kirby that he had no legal obligation to give the $43,000 back, but Howard felt the need to return the money to its rightful owner. Kirby needed a new roof on his house badly, but he had to do the right thing.

Kirby called the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to find out who donated the couch, and they said Kim Fauth-Newberry gave the ottoman to the store. The couch originally belonged to Kim’s grandfather Phillip Fauth, who died last year.

“It’s just crazy,” Fauth-Newberry said. “It’s completely awesome.”

“To me, this is someone that despite what they’re going through – and in spite of their own needs – says ‘I’m just going to do the right thing,’” said Rick Merling, the ReStore manager.

“I always thought what would I do if that ever happened, and now I know, and it makes me feel good,” Kirby said.

Howard Kirby is sofa king moral.
