Here’s What We Know About The Rumored ‘Mighty Ducks’ Series On Disney Plus

Everything You Can Watch On Disney+ Launch

There are five sports movies that encapsulate everything it meant to be a kid in the ’90s: The Sandlot, Space Jam, Little Giants, Rookie of the Year, and The Mighty Ducks. That’s it. That’s the Mt. Rushmore of all kid-friendly sports movies that meant absolutely everything to kids who came of age when Michael Jordan dominated the hardwood at the United Center and Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick were behind the desk on SportsCenter.

With Disney Plus positioned to dominate as a new player in the streaming wars, rumors are circulating that Disney is getting its ducks in a row to reboot one of its most beloved ’90s franchises, The Mighty Ducks.

And of course, it will probably be forthcoming on Disney Plus.

According to /Films, production and shooting for the Disney Plus Mighty Ducks reboot is set to begin in February 2020 and run til June in Vancouver. /Films reports the following logline as a premise for the series:

“After getting kicked off the junior division Mighty Ducks team, a 13-year-old boy and his mom decide to start their own team, finding players, a coach, and a place to play”

When rumors about a Mighty Ducks reboot began swirling in 2018, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Emilio Estevez was not attached to the project to play his iconic role, coach Gordon Bombay. That may have changed since then, though the current /Films report makes no further mention of Emilio’s involvement in the project. The same is unknown about Joshua Jackson iconic character in the Mighty Ducks universe, Charlie Conway.

That said, clearly Disney wants this to be more than just a quaky cash grab: Mighty Ducks trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill and producer Jordan Kerner are connected to the series, making many hopeful it will live up to the greatness of the original movies.

That said, it’s too soon to say (… although it’s impossible to imagine a reboot of this size without either Gordon Bombay or Charlie Conway). It’s also way too soon for a potential Mighty Ducks release date on Disney Plus, which just launched in the United States this week.

There’s a lot of ways a Mighty Ducks reboot could go – although the squad probably won’t find their coach from court-ordered community service in 2020.

I’m a huge fan of YouTube’s Cobra Kai reboot, which is a mixture of Karate Kid nostalgia with new, modern teenage drama, all with the original cast involved in some capacity in the show. It’s a show appeals to three generations of audiences.

/Films suggests that the Cobra Kai narrative model could be applied effectively to the Mighty Ducks reboot. This makes a lot of sense to me, given that Disney Plus offers a new format for storytelling. Also: The millennial generation that grew up yelling “DUCKS FLY TOGETHER!” at recess in the ’90s is now in a more mature life-stage as parents.

I’m excited to see what happens with the project, along with sharing it with others when it happens.

Charlie Conway as a hockey dad teaching the Flying V? Already gives me chills.

Sign me up, ducks fly together.
