The first trailer for Morbius, the Jared Leto-starring vampire superhero film in Sony’s Marvel Universe, is here. Morbius is the second film in Sony’s Spider-Man/Marvel franchise following 2018’s Venom.
Michael Morbius, a.k.a. “Morbius the Living Vampire”, is a former scientist who accidentally turns himself into a vampire as he searches for the cure to a rare blood disease.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa — who has previously helmed Safe House, Life, Child 44 — Morbius is set to hit theaters on Friday, July 31. In addition to the Academy Award-winning Leto in the title role, Morbius stars Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson.
Perhaps most excitingly, Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons is rumored to appear as Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, therefore officially bridging the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this Sony Spider-Man Universe. Simmons, who famously portrayed J. Jonah in the original Spider-Man trilogy, popped up at the end of last summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Following the success of Venom — the Ruben Fleischer-directed film earned over $850 million at the global box office on just a $100 million budget — Sony seems intent on forging forward with this “Spider-Man Universe”, as Venom 2, which could include a cameo from the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, is set to hit theaters later this year.
In addition to the two Venom films and Morbius, Sony is also reportedly developing solo films for other ancillary Spider-Man characters such as Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Silver Sable, Black Cat, Nightwatch, and the Sinister Six.
Oh, and also, if you’ve never heard of Adria Ajorna before, you certainly have now:
