Talk of the forthcoming Mr. & Mrs. Smith Amazon Prime series from Donald Glover have been swirling for years. There was a lot of chatter in 2021 when Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) departed Donald Glover‘s project and compared her departure to the dissolving of a marriage.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s presumed role was replaced by Maya Erskine, who at the time was best known for PEN15, but she her lead role as Mizu in Blue Eye Samurai is in the running for the best character/show of 2023, as far as I’m concerned.
With the first episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith set to air on Prime Video on February 2nd, the first trailer just dropped and it looks great (IMHO):
The premise of Mr. & Mrs. Smith doesn’t seem too far off from the 2005 film that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In that film, Brad and Angelina were both professional assassins who were married and then shocked to learn their partner was an assassin.
While the TV show doesn’t follow that exact plot it’s similar. In the Donald Glover-Maya Erskine Mr. & Mrs. Smith version on Prime, they are both highly-trained spies working at the same agency who are paired together in an arranged marriage. They then go off exploring a life of “espionage, wealth, and travel” while having to maintain their cover as a married couple.
This is Donald Glover’s first major TV project since Atlanta and he’s proven himself as a hitmaker in his career. So there’s absolutely zero reason whatsoever to doubt that this will be a hit.
