A woman in Pennsylvania’s Fairfield Township spotted animal tracks and followed them believing that they’d lead to her neighbor’s dog. Instead, she found a mysterious animal that was shivering and scared. She was able to lure the mystery animal out of the cold and into her basement and that’s when things got really strange. Experts are still unable to identify what it even is.

I think this is a dog. From the thumbnails I’ve seen and the video clip below, I believe this mystery animal is a dog of some sort. But the experts legitimately don’t know. They cannot say what this mystery animal is and that’s absolutely wild to me.

Christina Eyth told NBC News that when she discovered the unidentified animal after following tracks it was displaying “scared behavior” so she lured it to her basement. This sounds like the beginning to a horror story but it’s real life. After getting it inside and warming the creature up she called in the experts who were baffled.

Eyth said that first, she thought the creature might be a coyote or a dog. After calling Wildlife Works, a local rescue, and transferring the creature to their facility for care, there have only been more questions. Morgan Barron, a certified wildlife rehabilitator at Wildlife Works, had trouble identifying what this animal could be and told NBC News she couldn’t “definitively say what it is.”

“But to err on the side of caution since they can carry rabies and since it might be a coyote, we can keep it here, get genetic testing done, and then kind of go from there,” Barron explained. (via TODAY)

Here are a few local news clips on this mystery animal:

Wildlife rehabilitator Morgan Barron says the mystery animal isn’t displaying any aggression and they’re describing it as ‘timid’ which has them leaning towards ‘dog’ instead of ‘coyote’. It is currently being isolated and treated for mange, a skin disease caused by parasitic mites. So for now, it’s ‘sit and wait’ on the genetic testing until they can figure out what this creature actually is.

It has to be a dog, right? You saw those images. It’s just as plausible that this is a coyote but the behavior really indicates that it’s a dog. We will know in the coming days or weeks what it is, I suppose.
