Rumor Has It ‘National Treasure 3’ With The GOAT Nicolas Cage Is In The Works

Did you know — despite the constant clowning on him that we do — that Nicolas Cage is actually an Academy Award-winning actor?

That’s right, in the year 1996, Cage took home the prize for Best Actor at the 68th Academy Awards for his performance as a suicidal alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas. And frankly, it’s a gripping movie and a stunning performance from Cage, who is able to channel his infamous manic energy into a deep-seated ball of darkness that we’ve rarely seen from the mercurial actor.

The reason that I mention this is that it’s important to understand that Cage has not always been the waking 4-D meme nightmare that we know and love today — there was once a time were he was a legitimate, respected performer. Just look at the 10-year-long run he put together following his Academy Award-winning turn in Leaving Las Vegas:

Hell of a run. This is simply a long way of saying that I really, really hope that these rumors of a third National Treasure film are true, because I, for one, would like to live in a world where Nic Cage is relevant for reasons other than being a psycho.

According to our sources – the same ones who told us an Aladdin sequel was in the works, and that a Joker sequel is happening, both of which are now confirmed – Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage will reprise his role as protagonist Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian and amateur cryptologist who dedicates his life to searching for a lost treasure that was hidden during the American Revolutionary War.

It’s currently unknown whether the film will release in theaters or go straight to Disney+, but either way, it’s sure to be an event that fans won’t want to miss out on. After all, despite lackluster reviews from critics, the National Treasure series has proven to be a box office success. [via We Got This Covered]

So, do me a favor, keep your fingers crossed for National Treasure 3, and if you find yourself in the mood to soak in some depression on a random Saturday night in, peep Leaving Las Vegas.
