Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain took his own life in April of 1994 when the band was on the top of the world. In the year prior, 1993, Nirvana recorded a concert on MTV Unplugged that will always be remembered as one of the best acoustic performances ever filmed.
That Unplugged album was released on November 1st, 1994 and it was the first Nirvana release after the death of Kurt Cobain which made it almost impossible for some fans to watch because Cobain’s death was still so fresh. The concert/album was recorded at the Sony Music Studios in NYC and it included covers of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, and others.
I remember straining to stay awake to watch it on MTV way back in the day because I was so long that staying up that late was a task. And the entire impact of the recording/performance was sort of lost on me because I was too young to realize how Kurt Cobain’s suicide had impacted his fans, family, and the music industry. But damn do I remember it being an amazing performance.
Someone over on Reddit pointed out that whoever is running the official Nirvana YouTube channel recently started uploading remastered clips from the MTV Unplugged recordings including some remastered practice sessions of ‘Come As You Are’ and ‘Polly’.
