Two men were detained by police in North Carolina after they were seen riding a couch along a busy Charlotte area road. That’s right. They were riding a couch.

The responding cops from the Entertainment District Unit made the unique traffic stop on Friday, September 25. They didn’t say what time it occurred, but it was definitely at some point after happy hour.

“Well, this was certainly a first… our EDU Officers encountered quite the situation this weekend when they stopped two gentlemen traveling down S. Tryon Street on a couch… Yes, an actual couch. We had questions too,” the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media.

Police ‘appreciated the creativity’ and so did everyone else online

“While we appreciate the creativity, we do have to remind everyone: no matter what you’re ‘driving’ (using that term extremely loosely), please think about safety first,” police added.

“Ask yourself: Should this be on a road… with actual cars… will the sheer shock of seeing this on the road cause other drivers to lose focus and drive unsafely? If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes,’ maybe rethink the ride.”

Police did not disclose whether the “drivers” of the couch faced any criminal charges, but they did add, “As a rule – probably best to leave the mobile furniture displays to IKEA.”

“We really got the driving couch from Battlefield Hardline before GTA 6,” one person commented on Instagram.

“Truly couch surfing,” another person wrote on Facebook.

“God forbid a man has hobbies,” read another comment.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Entertainment District Unit was established in 2025 with the goal of enhancing nightlife safety by focusing on violent crime in the vicinity of bars, nightclubs, and sports and entertainment facilities. EDU officers work with venue staff and management to stop problems before they occur, and they are highly visible during the busiest nightlife hours.

Little did they know that when they started the new unit, they would one day be pulling over a motorized couch. Also, while they didn’t “stop this problem before it occurred,” thanks to the couch, they are definitely now much more visible.
