When you live in a city with man-made structures as far as the eye can see, you may forget we share this world with other animals.
TikTok creator Koshi (@solokoshi) was reminded of this fact when he spotted a snake slithering on the floor of his college housing at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
In the viral clip he posted to TikTok, the snake moves quickly close to a dorm room’s entrance, and then enters inside through the hole at the bottom of the door.
“Whoever’s apartment this is, I’m so sorry, but you got a new friend,” Koshi wrote in the video’s text overlay.
“Absolutely not,” he added in the caption.
Koshi’s video got over 1 million views.
Is The Snake Dangerous?
There are over 37 species of snakes in North Carolina, only six of which are venomous, according to data by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC).
The agency notes that damage to humans from snakes is uncommon, but advises caution nonetheless. A snake will most commonly cause damage to chicken coops, and whenever they enter buildings.
To identify venomous from non-venomous species, the NCWRC warns that head shape, pupil shape, or a rattling tail are not reliable identifying characteristics.
Instead, it recommends studying the venomous snakes in your region to learn what they typically look like. Color, pattern, size, and range can all help you figure out what you’re dealing with.
Viewers Hope He Informed The Apartment Residents
In the comments section, most users wanted to know whether he told the apartment residents what had just entered through their door.
“And you just watched that happen?” one user asked. “So low down bruh.”
Koshi responded, “Fun fact I knocked on the door and nobody was home, then shortly after, I saw the guy come home & I told him. Hope this helps!”
“This is why you will not catch me on the first floor,” another wrote.
“Me watching this while living on the first floor knowing I got a lil gap under my door,” said a third.
What To Do If You Find A Snake Inside Your Home?
If a snake has entered your living quarters, the first thing to remember is to stay calm and avoid panicking. If the snake is venomous, it’s much more likely to react if disturbed. Stay calm and create space between yourself and the animal.
If you’re unable to identify whether the snake is venomous or nonvenomous, you can call local authorities for removal. In North Carolina, an official NCWRC agent can safely identify and relocate it.
Whatever you do, do not try to harm the animal with sprays or poisons. Snakes are an important and protected species in North Carolina that contribute greatly to the environment.
