A woman went to her company’s annual holiday luncheon at Capital Grille in North Raleigh, N.C., and ordered a steak. She says her server laughed at her order and brought her a coloring book.
In a video with over 8,000 views, TikToker Danielle Boncella (@daniellaboncella) sits in her car and recounts the awkward situation at the company party.
“One thing about me, your girl loves a steak,” she says. “Do I like it medium-well? Yes. Do I like it dipped in ketchup? Also, yes.”
Boncella says she ordered her steak and asked for a side of ketchup, which sparked laughter from her co-workers and the server.
“The waitstaff is making fun of me, saying I should probably sit at the kids’ table,” she says, rolling her eyes.
Then, what the server brings to the table next shocks her.
“He ends up coming back a little bit later and brings this,” she says. Boncella holds up a Disney “Frozen”-themed coloring book wrapped in plastic.
“He says I need it for the kids’ table in case I get bored, I can color,” she says, laughing in disbelief.
The caption reads, “I promise I’m just a little kid trapped inside a 31 yr old body. If you’re ever in North Raleigh, Capital Grille is a must.”
Is It OK To Order Ketchup For A Steak At A Restaurant?
While customers may enjoy ketchup on their steak without a second thought at home, many who share this preference express their anxiety about their order on social media.
On the discussion platform Quora, one user asks whether it’s poor etiquette to ask for ketchup or A1 with their steak at a nice restaurant. Commenters are split, with some saying the chef could be mildly offended.
“Depending on the restaurant, some chefs might not like it, but they will get over it. They spend a lot of time just to make the dish taste just so. So they don’t like it when you want to change it. But you’re OK to ask for the sauce,” one suggests.
Another former steakhouse server shares, “The idea of someone asking for A1 sauce to accompany their steak never bothered me in the least. I did, however, never date a young lady again after having served a beautifully prepared filet mignon when she asked if I had any ketchup to dip it in!”
What Do Viewers Think Of The Capital Grille Server’s Joke?
Commenters under Boncella’s video debated whether the server went too far with his jokes about her steak preferences. Some said he should have accommodated her request without poking fun.
“Some people need to mind their business, if that’s the way u enjoy it, then so be it, boo boo ! you do you…” one wrote.
Another remarked, “That’s good. I’m proud of you. Stand firm for what you want. You have every right. Nobody should be judging you. And furthermore, it’s your steak, they’re not eating it haha furthermore who doesn’t use ketchup lol.”
Others said the server’s joke was clever and praised Boncella’s seemingly unbothered reaction.
A commenter said, “I love this!! Color pack brought out to complete the joke. My kind of people.”
“Glad to see you have a sense of humor. Most folks are so uptight these days,” a second wrote.
Boncella insisted she isn’t offended by the ordeal, writing, “Oh I didn’t mind at all! All in good fun!”
Boncella reiterated that sentiment in an email to BroBible. She called it the “best dining experience” she’s had “in a long time.”
“Nothing like dinner and some entertainment, even if I was the butt of the joke,” she added.
