‘High Protein Too’: Woman Shows Little-Known Feature Of Parmesan Cheese—All You Need Is The Rind And A Microwave

Parmesan cheese is one of the most versatile cheeses; its rich, savory flavor can be used in various dishes, and it is readily available in most grocery stores. However, there is a misconception that the rind is inedible because of its hard and dry texture. You might want to think twice before tossing your leftover Parmesan in the trash, because a woman just showed viewers how to get the most out of the cheese by turning the rinds into a delicious cheese puff snack.

Canada-based TikTok creator Sydney (@sydstyledd) demonstrates how in a viral video.

“Every once in a while, I remember if you microwave the rind of Parmesan cheese,” she says, gesturing with her finger the hardened outer edge of the cheese wedge she is holding. “It creates a delicious cheese puff.”

From there, the clip cuts to her standing in the kitchen.

“So, you just have to cut off the rind. Don’t wanna waste any cheese. Gonna do three pieces,” she says, slicing the block into three pieces. “Then, I’m gonna put them on a plate with some parchment paper and put them in the microwave for around a minute.”

Afterward, the content creator unveils three crispy cheesy puffs. “You are left with these little cheese puffs that are crunchy and delicious,” she says.

What Do Viewers Think?

Sydney’s video garnered over 386,000 views, prompting some to rush to their refrigerators to try it out themselves.

“Omg I need to try this!” one viewer commented.

“I have parm in my fridge that’s almost out. Thank you,” another stated.

A third reminded this is not only a cost-effective treat but also “high protein tooo.”

Meanwhile, those who have tried this claimed their attempts were unsuccessful.

“I’ve done this & they don’t crunch like a puff chip. So many attempts & it sucks every time lol,” one commenter recalled.

“I did this and it snapped my plate in half,” another shared.

Fool-Proof Method

The Kitchn recommends removing any wax and cutting the Parmesan rinds into 1-inch or smaller cubes. Subsequently, place them evenly spaced on a microwave-safe plate lined with parchment paper for 60-90 seconds. Note that the time it takes to heat the puffs depend on the microwave’s wattage. Typically, the lower the wattage, the longer it will take. To play it safe, you can start with 30 seconds and go from there, watching them until they expand.

Moreover, USA Today notes that results may vary depending on the cheese’s moisture level. Martha Stewart advises wrapping the dried-out cheese wedge in a damp cheesecloth and covering it with plastic wrap to absorb moisture overnight. Another method is to remove the cheese out of its original packaging, wrap it in a damp paper towel, and store it in an airtight container.

If your cheese puffs are still less-than-ideal, you can still use them in soups, sauces, and stews for added flavor.
