Food delivery robot
Humans have spent centuries grappling with technological developments that have managed to make jobs that were previously handled by people obsolete. That includes many tasks that robots are capable of handling, including the food deliveries that led to the arrest of a woman who staged an impromptu protest on the streets of Philadelphia.
The rise of artificial intellgience has led to the latest round of worries concerning technology’s impact on the human workforce, as people are understandably concerned about the possibility of being replaced by a computer in a world where most companies are more than happy to view employees as disposable if they have the chance to boost their profits.
However, A.I. is just the newest trend in a long line of advancements that have threatened people’s livelihoods.
It is being widely harnessed to take the preexisting world of robotics to the next level, including the roving machines that have become an increasingly popular sight in many places where they handle deliveries for restaurants and apps primarily targeted at people who are too lazy to leave their homes.
That includes Philadelphia, which was recently the site of a standoff that led to one woman being hauled off to jail.

Earlier this year, Philadelphia joined the list of nearly a dozen cities where some Uber Eats orders are handled by delivery robots, as those machines started ferrying orders in the vicinity of Center City in March.
The robots have caused some issues in other places, including one that damaged a bus stop in Chicago and another that rolled through an active crime scene in Los Angeles.
According to Philly Voice, Carolyn Marvin, a 78-year-old resident who formerly worked as a communications professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has spent months protesting the arrival of the robots by repeatedly blocking their path, a decision that stems from her belief they’re taking jobs from people.

On Wednesday, October 14th, she staged one that led to the Philadelphia Police Department responding to a report of “criminal mischief involving a robot” near Reading Terminal Market, and Marvin was ultimately arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after refusing to move out of the robot’s way.
Marvin (who says she plans to challenge the citation on First Amendment grounds) isn’t the only person who’s had an issue with them; a camera captured someone kicking one multiple times shortly after they rolled out in March.
If you’re familiar with Philly lore, you know the City of Brotherly Love has a fairly fraught relationship with robots, as one known as “HitchBOT” was somewhat infamously beheaded after it arrived there in 2015.
